<< Would anyone know the meaning of Pflegerschwester? >>

Dear Amoz,

there is a spelling error in the word you aree trying to find. It should
be spelled Pflegeschwester. That is probably why tou could not find it in
a dictionary.

A Pflegeschwester is the term used for a girl who is being raised in a
family, although not a biological child or biological sister to other
siblings in the household.

My mother's orphaned cousin was raised by my grandparents. She would have
been my mother's Pflegeschwester.

Seek Book by Kalisz Dayan SZTARKMAN ca. 1920 #rabbinic

Mendel Starkman <menaches@...>

My family originates >from Kalisz, Poland. My great-grandfather was
a dayan (rabbinic judge) in the city, and he passed away in the late
1920s. I recently found out that he wrote a sefer (book) late in
his life (probably between 1915 and 1930), and I am trying to find
any information available about it. Unfortunately, I do not have
the name of the sefer. All I know is that his name was Yosef Meir
SZTARKMAN (STARKMAN/SHTARKMAN). (Sztarkman is spelled with a Hebrew
'Shin'.)

Any assistance (even just the name of the book) would be greatly
appreciated.

Does anyone have a mtDNA match with me? #dna

Annie, The WritingTeacher <writingteacher7@...>

Anyone on this list have an mtDNA match with me? If so, let me know
off the list what geographic area your recent ancestors could be
from. I've posted my mtDNA sequences at:
<http://www.newswriting.net/id4.html>. I want to see whether any
Ashkenazi matches with my Sephardi grand parents (maternal lines).
The lineages would combine Moroccan Sephardi with Polish Ashkenazi
and other areas.

Locating a Shtetl #hungary

Sam Schleman <Samara99@...>

Dear Genners:

I am hoping someone more knowledgeable than I about Hungarian geography can
help me.

I am looking for the shtetl Nagy Ida. In the Shtetl Seeker on JewishGen, it
gives the current name of Velka Ida and the location as 188 miles East of
Bratislava and the coordinates as 48-36 and 21-10.

However, when I go to a current map (The one by Ravenstein), Velka Ida is
shown about 10 kms South of Kosice. When I go to a 1910 map at
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/abauj-t.jpg
for Abauj-Torna, Nagy Ida is as the Ravenstein map indicates.

Is there more than one Nagy Ida? Is Shtetl Seeker in error? Can anyone
clarify this for me?

Thanks.

Sam
