Jews in Hungary after WWII #hungary

My family and I were in Budapest after WWII. We had spent the most dangero=
us months during the winter of 1944-45 at the Abonyi Utca Gymnasium transfo=
rmed into an alleged clothing workshop by Capt. Laszlo Ocskonyi (WWI), scio=
n of an aristocratic family and thus able to exert some influence. We survi=
ved. My father was in the Munka Tabor (Labor Camp), and he died near Voron=
zh in 1943. =20

After the war, there were very few visas available for transport to the wes=
t. Hungary had, after all, been an ally of Germany. Available visas would=
go to those who had vertical relatives (parents or children) in the US. La=
teral relatives like siblings did not qualify for the privilege.

We had family in the US, and my grandparents and cousin would qualify for t=
hose visas, and they did leave in 1947. My and I did not, however qualify,=
and if we did not leave Hungary we would be trapped behind the Iron Curtai=
n. So, mother and I left for Germany in September, 1946. We took a taxi a=
cross no-man's land, and my mother simply told the border guard that a man =
had promised to marry her. It was, of course, true. =20

During that post WWII period, there were still severe food shortages, and t=
he black market was active. =20

REVESZ and ROZENBERG #hungary

cgsimon17@...

I am trying to help my husband Les SIMON find some information on his maternal grandparents and their families in Hungary. His grandfather Abraham Albert REVESZ was born in TEMESVAR (now TIMISOARA in Romania) 11/7/1861. He emigrated to Chicago in 1904 and lived there until his death in 1948. His family name originally may have been Rausnitz, Ransnitz or Rothfeld.
Terez (Fercz, Resi) ROZENBERG (or Rozenberg) was born in NAGYKERPEST, a (now Cornisesti, Romania) a tiny village near Timisoara. She died about 1899, probably in KECSKEMET where my husband's mother and her two older brothers were born between 1892 and 1896. The only other information I have about her is that her daughter Bess SIMON wrote her motherâ??s name as "Theresa Bosa Briar" in our son's baby book. She definitely died in Hungary.
The information we have is >from public records in the city of Kecskemet. We have good information on Abraham beginning with his emigration >from Europe. We do not, however, have the name of his second wife. Her maiden name may also have been SIMON.

Dear siggers,

I am curious if there is any archive of those 2800 gravestones in the
cemetery of Balassagyarmat (Nograd county, Hungary). I am searching the
graves of my Frisch ancestors who may be buried in this cemetery (I have
picture of the gravestones of the cousin of my grandfather and his wife and
there are three more gravestones of the family, but I am convinced that
there are more.
I'll be happy for each information.

Hi. My husband's grandmother's was detained for 3 days in 1903. Ellis
Island will tell the reason in passenger list manifest. Give name of
ship and search all links with the name you have. Our grandma was held

Surname "Zwitchik" #general

Shoshana Kahan <lilishoshana@...>

My Great Grandmother's maiden name, according to her death certificate, was
"Zwitchik," and "Sweitsie" according to a note scrawled in the Brooklyn
Hebrew Orphans Asylum records. Searching phonetically in the Ellis Island
records under "Zwitchik", I came up with 39 records of immigrants with
similar-sounding names, only 2 of whom were Jewish: Chane and Schmiler
Zwiczik of "Weingood, Russia," whom I don't find in any census records.
I've also searched many sources within Jewish Gen and Avoteynu, including
the consolidated surname index, and I don't come across many Jews with a
similar-sounding name. The names "Zeitchik" was fairly common, but, unless
I'm confused, that was pronounced quite differently (it doesn't come up as
phonetically related.)

The point of this ramble is two-fold; first of all, I want to ask if any of
the Genners have any ancestors with a similar name? Second, I'd like another
opinion as to how perplexed I should be that my Great Grandmother, who was a
Jew >from "Russia" -- probably the Ukraine -- should have a name that was more
often Polish, Russian or even Hungarian than Jewish. Does anyone, by the way,
have any idea of what it might mean?

Thanks,
Shoshana Kahan

Woodbine Jewish agriculture colony of South Jersey #general

Steve Pickoltz

Does anyone know if Woodbine has any death and or marriage records for the
settlers of the near by Alliance colony of South Jersey? I'm looking for a
death in late Dec. 1891, very early Jan. 1892 and a marriage between 1892
and 1910. I've already tried the local governments, county governments, the
state Archives, and the Alliance cemetery. The people at Woodbine, using
there listed E-mail, have never gotten back to me.

Any help greatly accepted.
