Researching old Brazilian Newspapers #latinamerica

Schulman, Judy <jschulman@...>

Dear Latin America SIG:

Does anyone know if there is a way to look at old Brazilian newspapers
online? I am trying to see if an obituary exists for a distant cousin
Erich EICHNER. I would also be interested in any articles written
about him after his death. He started the bookstore/publishing company
Livraria Kosmos in Rio de Janeiro in 1935. He died on 8/11/1974.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sincerely

Judy Schulman

Havana - ALENICOFF, Lipa and Cila #latinamerica

Myree Mueller <kmueller@...>

Hi

Lipa and Cila ALENICOFF appear in a ship's manifest >from Cuba to New
York in June 1940 when they went to visit Lipa's brother Phillip. At
the time their address was *** Perseverancia, Havana, Cuba.

Lipa was the brother of Phillip (b. 1898), Milly (b. circa 1888), and
Haia, my grandmother (b. 14 September 1902).

All >from Vitebsk, Lipa ended up in Cuba, Phillip in New York, Milly
married BOROVITCH and was in London and Haia became a BLUESTEIN, then
MULLER in Shangai then back to Bluestein when she moved to the States
in 1950).

I have no information on either my grandmother Haia after she arrived in the
States in 1950 or of Lipa and his family in Cuba.

It is said that Lipa and Cila had a son. I have no other information on his
name or of any other children.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Regards,

Myree (Koko) Mueller

dual patronymics #belarus

pangolin19@...

Hello:

I have found some of my grandfather's grammar school forms >from Grodno
in the late 1890s. On three different forms his name is listed as
"Joseph Naumovitch-Girshovitch Adunsky." This is the only place we
have seen the hyphenated patronymic. His father was Nahum; so was
Girsh (Hirsh) his grandfather? Was this a common naming convention at
the time? Thanks for any insights.

Re: Balassagyarmat Cemetery #hungary

Dear Karl,

I am responding to your query in the H-SIG Digest of July 18.

I visited the Balassagyarmat Jewish cemetery in late May, where I also have
relatives buried.

I met a man by the name of Béla Majdán who is presently working on a list of
all the gravestones in this cemetery. I was given a book that this man
published in 2004; perhaps I could look up if some relatives of yours are
mentioned therein?

Unfortunately though his English is very limited and I have sent him a
follow-up e-mail to my visit, but to date have not had a response. FYI, his
email is: <snip>

I would be interested in how your investigations go.

I hope this is of some assistance.

As I am a very new member, has any other information with regard to this
cemetery been previously made available to this group?

Re: Kojata #hungary

Hello Sonja Marder,

I have very recently joined this group and saw your message re Kojata in the
H-SIG Digest for July 18.

I believe the town you are looking for is called Kajatha in Slovakia and
Kajata in Hungary, as this town's current location is in both Slovakia and
Hungary. I believe it is in the county of Abauj-Torna in the district of
Fúzér.

I hope this is of some assistance.

Re: Cemetery in Balasagyarmat

One possible source might be the Museum of Hungarian Speaking Jewry in Zvat,
Israel. I have been able to recieve cemetery information in the past, after
making a donation.

Re: Record of Detained Alien Passengers #general

Odeda Zlotnick

All females traveling alone, regardless of age, were detained until picked
up by a male. Minors were detained too. If you found her on a detention
list, you should be able to find her name on the ship's passenger list as
well -- possibly under different spelling. That would give you another
chance at finding who she was traveling to .
