Hungary Heritage Trip #hungary

Stuart Ungar

Thought the group might have an interest in a story I wrote that ran this past Sunday in the Louisville
Courier-Journal. It details the spiritual journey I took with my twelve-year-old son back to our Hungarian roots.
It was an early Bar Mitzvah gift. The link is here:

SCHWADRON / REICH - Cabiny or maybe Stropkov, Slovakia #hungary

steinsteve@...

Looking for descendants of Isadore SCHWADRON and Sarah REICH SCHWADRON, who
may have been researching the REICH family >from Hungary/Slovakia. The
SCHWADRONs attended my parents' wedding in the Bronx in 1948, lived on Logan
Street in East New York, Brooklyn. In the 1940 census, they have 3 children,
Lillian, Renee, and Joseph.

The family story was that Sarah was related to my grandmother but no one
knew how. I recently found Sarah in the 1940 Census as well as in the NYC
marriage records, which led me to an entry on EIDB showing her coming from
Csebinye (Cabiny) in northeast Slovakia just sound of Medzilaborce, just
over the ridge >from my GGF's town.

I'm hoping that maybe someone has done the REICH family a little further
back. There seem to be many REICHs in the 1869 Hungarian census >from nearby
Stropkov.

Million documents dealing with Jewish communities that were wipped out in Soviet Union #general

Rose Feldman <rosef@...>

Though I have yet to find an announcement in English, Ha'aretz
newspaper in Hebrew announced that a million documents dealing with
the Jewish communities that were wiped out in the Soviet Union will be
made available. If you right click on the article you can get a
translation.

Hopefully there will be announcement in English soon as the Holocaust
Remembrance Day in Israel approaches.

Help Grow JOWBR - Next Update #lodz #poland

Nolan Altman

The next update to JewishGen's JOWBR (JewishGen's Online Worldwide Burial
Registry) Database (http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/) will be in
June and will include all submissions made through May 31. Per JOWBR's
requirements, submissions should include complete cemeteries or cemetery
sections, not individual family burial information.

JOWBR currently contains over 1.7 million Jewish burial records >from 65
countries. The database grows through the efforts of our donors; Jewish
Genealogical Societies, individuals, historical societies, cemetery
administrators, synagogues and Chevra Kadishas. If you are aware of
cemetery records that are not currently in our database, we would appreciate
if you could help us obtain them and help grow the database.

If you're interested in making a submission, please see "Submitting Data to
JOWBR" at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Submit.htm If you
prefer, you can also watch our online screencasts that show you how JOWBR
works and will also walk you through the completion of the standard
templates at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Screencasts/

If you have any questions, please contact me at NAltman@... Thank
you in advance for your help!

State archive records less than 100 years old #general

Chuck Weinstein <cmw521@...>

Avraham Yehoshua Kahana asked why JRI-Poland indexing teams do not go to the
local civil offices to index records. The answer is there are no teams.
Virtually all records that are indexed on all of the SIGs come >from efforts
by the LDS Church to film vital records everywhere around the world. Due to
privacy rules in most countries, they are only allowed to film records in
the State Archives. In Poland, as in most other European countries, these
records are not available for mass filming before the end of the privacy
period. Individual researchers can go and examine local records under
whatever rules may apply in each locality. Here in the United States, and
wherever the Mormons have a presence, microfilms of the original records are
available at most LDS churches in their attached Family History Centers.
You may have to order the appropriate film reels >from Salt Lake City, but
they are available for a token fee. The indexes are necessary to order the
right reel and to help you find the record amongst thousands on a reel.

There are still millions of Jewish records the Mormons have filmed
throughout Europe that have not yet been indexed by SIGs. If you are
interested in organizing or participating in a project to index records,
contact your SIGs of interest to find out what is necessary and available.
In order to index records, you will need some basic familiarity with
Microsoft Excel and some spare time to help your fellow researchers find
family records. You don't even have to leave your living room to do this
work. You can even do it in Israel. There are many different translation
guides available to help you figure out what information is on each record.
Unfortunately, there are still some areas of eastern Europe that are
off-limits to the Mormons still and other areas are just now being filmed.
However, there are still many projects available.
