Seeking Advice on Visiting Boryslav, Turka, Vaslui #general

Noah Lapidus <lapidus.noah@...>

Dear JewishGen Community-
I hope this message finds you well. Next week I leave for Eastern
Europe to fulfill a life long dream of visiting my 20 ancestral
shtetls. Studying in Vilna, I plan to travel on weekends and holidays.
My journey begins in the south, where in addition to regional
landmarks I'll visit:
(1) Boryslav, Ukraine (in particular the neighborhood and former
municipality of Wolonka)
(2) Turka, Ukraine (in particular the nearby village of Ilnyk)
(3) Vaslui, Romania
I've built an itinerary based on the limited travelogues and
itineraries found on the internet, but I figured I'd reach out to this
community for further suggestions... In particular I am looking for
details on Jewish landmarks (cemeteries, memorials, synagogues, etc.)
and the best way to navigate these towns on a college budget. I really
appreciate your insight in advance, I can be reached by email at
lapidus.noah@gmail.com
Best,
Noah

new genealogy ebook on JGSGB #unitedkingdom

Arlene Beare

I have updated my Guide to Jewish genealogy in Latvia and Estonia and it
is now in ebook format. I must stress that this will be of use to
researchers not only >from Latvia and Estonia but elsewhere in Eastern Europe. =
There is a brief chapter on Sources in the UK and with one click you can
go to the National Archives. I have a brief Introduction to Genetic
Genealogy and one on Social Media with links to sites with a more detailed
explanation.
This is the first ebook published by JGSGB (Jewish Genealogical Society
Great Britain), who will benefit >from the sales. There are a few copies
in print format but we wanted it to be mainly published as an ebook.
The second edition of my Book was in 2006 and many telephone numbers and
addresses of Archives have changed as well as Internet sites and email
addresses which means that the second edition is now out of date.
These have all been updated. There is information on Passports both
Internal and External.
The book contains the excellent chapter written by Nick Evans on Emigration
detailing how our Ancestors got to other Countries >from Latvia always
remembering that many Lithuanians may also have sailed >from Libau now
Liepaja.

THE URL is
http://shop.jgsgb.org.uk/

The book is listed under featured publications and you can buy it for £5.00.
You will receive am email giving you a username and password to access the
site in the future and another email with download details. The book is in
pdf format and easily navigable.

Israel Consul General to attend film screening at IAJGS conference #ciechanow #poland

Janette Silverman <cochairs@...>

There are so many exciting things happening at this summer's conference.
We are thrilled to announce that Israel's consul general Ravit Baer
will present the August 11 screening of the acclaimed Israeli movie "The
Dove Flyer." Ms. Baer, a career diplomat in the Israeli foreign
service, served in Europe and Africa before becoming Israel's Consul
General to the Pacific Northwest.

"The Dove Flyer" will be shown as part of a Jewish film festival
that has been curated for the conference by leading Jewish film scholar
and teacher of cinema Dr. Eric Goldman. The film is based on Eli Amir's
blockbuster novel of the same name, brings to life the fragile, doomed
world of the Baghdad Jewish community in 1950.

It is one of many films in the festival of 33 motion pictures that
celebrate Sephardic Jewry, a major track of this summer's conference.
Other highlights of the Seattle conference include the opening night
keynote address by Dr. Devin Naar and the banquet address by Judy
Russell, a Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Lecturer.

In addition, as at previous conferences, key lectures and presentations
will be made available through LIVE! a real-time video streaming service
after up to 90 days after the conference. It's not too late to register
for the conference or to purchase LIVE! Visit the conference website,
www.iajgs2016.org , for more information about all aspects of the
conference.

We're looking forward to seeing so many of you in Seattle August 7-12.

Conference Co-Chairs

Correction in information about The Dove Flyer #ciechanow #poland

Janette Silverman <cochairs@...>

In our previous message, we incorrectly identified Deputy Consul General
Ravit Baer as Consul General. As previously announced, Ms. Baer, a
career diplomat in the Israeli foreign service, served
in Europe and Africa before becoming Israel's Deputy Consul General to
the Pacific Northwest. We are honored to have her present the August 11
screening of the acclaimed Israeli movie "The Dove
Flyer," and apologize for incorrectly identifying her.

"The Dove Flyer" will be shown as part of a Jewish film festival that
has been curated for the conference by leading Jewish film scholar and
teacher of cinema Dr. Eric Goldman. The film is based on Eli Amir's
blockbuster novel of the same name, brings to life the fragile, doomed
