Saraspatak and Budapest cemeteries, responses to Richard Sobel's postiny #hungary

Jake Jacobs

This message is >from Richard Sobel <sobel2@fas.harvard.edu>, who tried to post this message to the list and failed. He asked me to try.

A 2nd cousin recently visited Sarospatak where our grandparents came from, and tried to get into the Jewish cemetery but it was locked, and he was told there is no caretaker. Yet he took pictures over the wall and it seems better cared for (grass relatively short) than when I visited many years ago. Does anyone know anything about the cemetery there, e.g. A list of burials, caretaker, etc.? Also does anyone know if there are any Jews left there, and have any contacts? By the way, the Synagogue is a computer store but has a picture of the Synagogue on the front.
Also, the cousin and a Hungarian cousin visited the Budapest cemetery, and the found the graves of the brother of our grandparents who stayed when the rest of the family came to the US. (See "Abris Survived," Avotaynu, Winter 2009). Does anyone know anything about the Budapest cemetery or have contacts there? R

Russian POWs from Hungarian Labor Service #hungary

Jake Jacobs

Randolph Braham"s seminal work on the Hungarian Labor service says many jewish
HLS conscripts were taken as prisoners of war following the battle near Voronezh
in January 1943. Are there any records of these prisoners, after they were captured
by Russia? My great uncle was in this group. His name was Imre Laszlo Havas, born
1910 in Bekes He was in the VI Battalion >from Puspokladany. The battalion's last
recorded location was Saguny, now in Ukraine There are a few Jewish graves here,
from this battle My great-uncle is not among them.
Many thanks

Diane Jacobs

Convention for Dates #hungary

David Lewin

To whom do I address a request for a change in Jewishgen "norm"
which, in my opinion affects a large part of our membership?

I would like Jewishgen to change their convention to and adopt a Date
Display which use three letters of the Alphabet for the months names
rather than two digits.

The difference between the American "norm" and the non-American norm
causes no end of problems:- Is 02/07 the 7th o February or is it
the 2nd of July?

David Lewin
London

Moderator: The genealogical protocol would be 7 Feb and 2 Jul.
