I am working with fellow Pilica researchers to computerize the indexes to
the Mormon LDS Pilica records. I am having a great deal of difficulty
reading the Polish cursive handwriting on the indexes. Does anybody
know of a resource that could help me interpret this cursed cursive
writing? Thanks.

I am trying to track the genealogy of my uncle-by-marriage, Meir
Zeev (Wolf) SELZER born in 1907 in Trembowla in the Tarnopol
Guberina, then Poland, now Ukraine. I've done fairly well with
the SELZER side of the family, and am now working on his mother's
side. She was Jette Perl POLISIUK, and she had 3 sisters and 1
brother: Jochewed, married to Hersh HAMMER (I found records of
the births of 4 of their children in the Kozlow PSA AGAD births
on JRI-Poland database); Yehudit, married to Yitzchok Zvi
ZLOCHOWER, and a third sister who's name I don't know, but who
married a POSTMAN (first name also unknown). The families of the
sisters (HAMMER, ZLOCHOWER & POSTMAN) moved to America at some
time before World War 2, and as far as I know, all survived the
holocaust. The brother was Pinchus POLISIUK, and he emigrated to
Palestine in the 1930's. The SELZERs remained in Trembowla and
unfortunately, my uncle Meir was his family's sole survivor. He
emigrated to Palestine in 1943 and died in Bnai Brak in 1985.

The 5 siblings were the children of Meir Wolf POLISIUK, who,
according to undocumented family tradition was a descendent of
the MaHarSha (Harav Shlomo Eliezer Halevi), and each of the
children in turn had a son named Meir Wolf (Max in English).

I am in touch with the ZLOWCHOWER and POLISIUK families, but
they don't know much about the past. I am trying to track down
the HAMMERs and the POSTMANs, as well as any information that can
connect them to the MaHarSha.

Please reply privately unless your answer is of interest to the
entire list.

Many thanks,

Rav Yehoshua Heschel of Apta (Ostrow) #rabbinic

One of my ancestors is believed to have been a disciple of
R' Yehoshua of Apta. A few questions:

1) Since this ancestor was known to have lived in Ostrow (H) what
was the connection between Apta and Ostrow as to Yehoshua Heschel?

2) Is there a list of disciples of Yehoshua Heschel anywhere?

3) Was Yehoshua Heschel an Admo"r or connected to any branch of
chassidut or "just" a unique rabbinical figure on his own?

Thank you,

P.S. My neighbor is a descendant of Heschel but he's not around now

Romanian Communities #romania

Michael Toben <tobenm@...>

I am researching emigration >from continental Europe to the West. I am at
present interested in Romanian Jews who left their homes between 1881 and
1915. There was a large emigration to the West, what I do not know is where
they settled in large numbers and created new 'Romanian' communities. Any
help would be appreciated.

Noah Cohen #unitedkingdom

GRAHAM LEWIS

I have acquired copies of the 1896 naturalization background papers for NOAH
COHEN of 70 Middlesex Street, Whitechapel >from the National Archives (HO
144/396/B12078) which refers to his children SARAH, ANNIE and ABRAHAM. NOAH
was born in Warsaw in 1865, son of ABRAHAM COHEN & DEBORAH COHEN.

This is not the NOAH COHEN I am looking for, so if anyone would like these
papers (no charge), please get in touch and I'll be happy to post them to
you.

My NOAH COHEN (born c.1840 in Russia) was married to DORA and on the 1901
census they lived with their children ISRAEL and SIMON at 59 Wentworth
Street, Spitalfields. They had an older son called JOSEPH. The 1901 census
says they were naturalised British Subjects, but I can find no record of
their naturalisation >from the National Archives search facility. I am trying
to find out where they came from. Can anyone please suggest how I do that ?
Looks like they came to England between 1891 (they're not on the 1891 uk
census) and 1901.

Kind regards and many thanks in anticipation.
