WEISSENSTEIN (not WASSERSTEIN) and JUHN families #austria-czech

Barbara Zimmer

David asked for information about the WEISSENSTEIN and JUHN families
(incorrectly entered as WASSERSTEIN??) I was able to find the
following information on them.

Erwin and Anna Weisserstein had at least two children, Leslie and
Janet. I do not know if Leslie was a son or daughter. (Found on
Ancestry.com at England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005 )

Adolph and Greta JUHN entered the US aboard the Nyassa >from
Casablanca in 1941, Adolph was a university director, Grete was born
in Teplice. They were headed to his brother, Kurt, on Riverside
Drive in NY

Greta Juhn born 8 Dec 1905 entered the UK in 1956, headed to 111 Park
Avenue , London. (obviously, Erwin's sister)

Grete JUHN sailed to the US in 1952. Her address was 71 W 71st STreet
NYC. classifiied as Stateless. She flew >from London to New York in
1956 with Adolph Juhn.

Kurt Juhn was born in 1896. His wife's name was Carola. in 1942 he
lived at 762 Riverside Drive in New York City. He was born in
Prerov, Czechoslovakia.

Also in 1942, Erich Juhn, born in Prerov (and possibly Kurt's
brother) registered for the US "old men's draft". His wife was
Greta, and they lived at 67 W, 71st Street in NYC. (note the
similarity to the address given by Grete in 1952.) He was an
unemployed writer. (Hence, Adolph may have changed his first name
to Erich).

Erich Juhn died in NY in 1973. His brother Kurt died in 1971.

On behalf of cousin Martha Lev-Zion and all Michael Bernet's family,
I want to thank the entire JewishGen community for their many letters of

Official name change? #unitedkingdom

kirsten.gradel@...

Pursuing my search for Julius PINTO, born Q1 1888 Middelsboriugh I
found in the London Gazette an insert abt. a Julius PINTO of 42,
Church-road, Richmond, Agent. He changed his name to Robert James
HARWOOD by deed, dated 25 Oct 1927, enrolled 27 Oct 1927 in the
Enrolment Department etc.
So I have searched FreeBMD and the A... site for the Harwood name,
BMD, hoping to find clues. Several candidates but none conclusive.

However, here in Denmark an official name change is noted as an
addendum in the birth record and I wonder whether that is the case
also in UK, in which case I will order Julius' birth record.

GRAZI versus TOURGEMAN #sephardic

Alan J. Kania <ajkania@...>

I'm having a "brick wall" moment trying to cross my research across the
ocean. My wife's family [GRAZI] settled primarily in the Brooklyn, NY /
Deal, NJ area. Others moved out to Denver. Everything is fine with those
living relative-connections. The problem develops when I look at various
U.S. documents about the immigrants in the family. My question is where
would I look for records prior to coming to the United States?

Various naturalization application for the family indicated they were
born in Cairo, Egypt; Palestine, Jerusalem; "Turkey (Egypt)"; Persia.

The ships' manifests indicate they were born in Cairo, Egypt; Colon,
Panama; or Aleppo Syria.

World War II Army Enlistment Records include birthplaces of Cuba

The family lore states that one of the GRAZI ancestors was a merchant
and a translator to the royal court in Aleppo, Syria. No one really
can substantiate the story. I have been told the Arabic word for
"translator" is some form of TOURGEMAN. This is where the search gets
baffling.

I have been able to document a family link between the GRAZI family
and a TOURGEMAN family. It appears that when the family emigrated >from
the Ottoman Empire, half the family arrived in New York City and
maintained the name GRAZI. The other half of the family settled in
Central and South America and maintained the name TOURGEMAN. Both
versions of the family have confirmed this division of names and
settlement locations.

With this confusion between the two family surnames (or surname and
profession), can someone give me some guidance on where any family
records could be maintained to substantiate the documentation of the
family in Aleppo, Syria and/or Cairo, Egypt?

Has anyone had experience with hiring a reputable researcher over
there who is familiar with the various languages in which the records
may be written?
