asked for
"help figuring out which Lyubomyrka/Lyubomirka Sam YURIK came >from in
1914. The Gazetteer offers me seven towns with this town name in
Ukraine.
The manifest ...indicates that Sam came >from "Labomirka, Russia." Sam
did not write the card himself, so the spelling is guess work.So far,
my searches for the family name YURIK in a town with a name like
Lyubomyrka in the Russian Empire before 1914 have turned up very
little information.Does anyone have useful advice about where to turn
next? Since Sam never naturalized, but remained an alien till his
death in 1966, there is no declaration of intent or petition to
naturalize, the forms that provide the most background information for
immigrants in this period.
I'd be very grateful for any help folks can offer me."

Patricia...since he came after WWI before WWI he would not need an
immigration visa; but he'd need some proof when he returned after WWI.
Also he should have completed a WWII "old mans draft" but i dont see
anything for him (both ancestry and familysearch have these)

If he didnt naturalize (and certainly the census will verify that), he
may well have completed an alien registration around 1942. You need to
initiate a query with the USCIS...altho that can be expensive, it is
most likely to have the information you seek.

Deciphering two Finkel records #ukraine

Marilyn Levinson

Dear fellow researchers
I would be very grateful if you help me read two entries. The first is
for Schaje Finkel who arrived in New York City on January 1, 1908 departing
Rotterdam on the ship Statendam. I have found the record
on ancestry under immigration and Schaje is on line 7. I cannot read on
the second page of the manifest the name of the person to whom he is going. I
believe it is a cousin. Secondly, Sam, Rosie George and Bennie are listed
in the 1915 New York census. Again, I found this record on ancestry. Can
anyone help me read the occupation of Mr. Finkel. I thank you in advance
for your help.

STAMMER #ukraine

Sabine Schmidt <suhschmidt@...>

Some quite good researchers found out a lot about my grandmother`s family
but what I am most interested in nobody so far could find out:
I want to know what happened to the parents of my grandmother. It is said
they were killed because salt was found on their ground but nobody knows
when and by whom.
Here the facts I know:
Leybush/Leib Stammer born in Ostroh 1858/9 married in 1880 to Liba
Leiserovna Pamu (b. 1862)>from Odessa.
They lived in Odessa and had at least 11 children born between 1881 and
1906, one of them my grandmother Polina (b.1886). Some children left Odessa
for Germany, Denmark and USA. Some of them later were good at playing an
instrument. My grandmother for example studied music(piano) at the
conservatory in Leipzig. Her son, my father was born in Leipzig 1910.

Who can help me to find out more about LEIB STAMMER and LIBA LEISEROVNA
PAMU?
What can I do or where can I ask?

Help identifying the correct town of Lyubomyrka for Sam YURIK #ukraine

Patricia Klindienst <epk13@...>

Dear Friends,

I need help figuring out which Lyubomyrka/Lyubomirka Sam YURIK came >from in 1914. The Gazetteer offers me seven towns with this town name in Ukraine.

Sam YURIK was born in 1895-6 and came to the US in 1914. He joined the Jewish Legion in 1918. He trained in Nova Scotia before being sent to England for more training with the Royal Fusiliers. He was in the 39th battalion deployed to defend Palestine >from the Turks in WWI. I am writing his story based on his letters home, photographs, and other documents, but tracing him back to his native town in Russia, and finding anyone >from his family in Russia, has eluded me so far.

The only hint of Sam's origins is the ship manifest for his return to the US via Quebec after World War I. The manifest is accompanied by a clearly inscribed card that indicates that Sam came >from "Labomirka, Russia." Sam did not write the card himself, so the spelling is guess work.

So far, my searches for the family name YURIK in a town with a name like Lyubomyrka in the Russian Empire before 1914 have turned up very little information.

Does anyone have useful advice about where to turn next?

Since Sam never naturalized, but remained an alien till his death in 1966, there is no declaration of intent or petition to naturalize, the forms that provide the most background information for immigrants in this period.

I'd be very grateful for any help folks can offer me.

Thank you,

Looking for information on Reb Dovid'l of Vidzy and family #lithuania

Harold Berman

I have posted this request previously some years ago, but with the advent of
a new year, I am hoping that one of the old and or new members would be in
a position to possibly help with some new information or suggestions.

I am trying to trace the family of my maternal great grandfather Reb Dovid
Sudansky.

He according to family lore was the Rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva of the yeshiva in
VIDZY [WIDZE], possibly in the mid 1800's.

On page 142 in the Yiskor book of Vidzy there is mention of a Reb Dovid'l
of Widze, I am presuming that this refers to my great grandfather. I am
also trying to find out if it actually was my ggfather, and the
approximate time frame that this event took place.

I have been in contact with Eudice Harris who edited the Yiskor book, but
she couldn'tunfortunately offer any information on the matter.

The only other family facts that I am aware of is that my grandmother Paya
was born in 1864, and that she had three other sisters, one of whom,
Nachama, made Aliyah in the early 1900's. Of the other two sisters I have
no information at all. There was also a brother Hershel [TZVI] who made
Aliyah in the early 1930's. I have found mention of a TZVI Sudansky
who passed away in Israel during this period, but I found that there is no
connection to our family.

Again according to family lore, HERMANN JADLOWKER the chazzan and opera
singer was a cousin.

Any suggestions or assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks,

in Israel during this period, but I found that there is no connection to our
family.

Again according to family lore, HERMANN JADLOWKER the chazzan and opera
singer was a cousin.

Any suggestions or assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

South Africa SIG #SouthAfrica Looking for information on Reb Dovid'l of Vidzy and family #southafrica

Harold Berman

I have posted this request previously some years ago, but with the advent of
a new year, I am hoping that one of the old and or new members would be in a
position to possibly help with some new information or suggestions.

I am also
trying to find out if it actually was my ggfather, and the approximate time
frame that this event took place.

I have been in contact with Eudice Harris who edited the Yiskor book, but
she couldn't unfortunately offer any information on the matter.

The only other family facts that I am aware of is that my grandmother Paya
was born in 1864, and that she had three other sisters, one of whom Nachama
made Aliyah in the early 1900's. Of the other two sisters I have no
information at all. There was also a brother Hershel [TZVI] who made Aliyah
in the early 1930's. I have found mention of a TZVI Sudansky who passed away
in Israel during this period, but I found that there is no connection to our
family.

Again according to family lore, HERMANN JADLOWKER the chazzan and opera
singer was a cousin.

Any suggestions or assistance would be gratefully appreciated.
