Russian Army lists #general

Mitchell J. Block <m.block@...>

In researching my grandmother's family (KALINA) & shtetl, (Zambrov, eastern
Poland), I found out that some of the male inhabitants were actually
recruited into the Russian Army before the town was "invaded" by the
Germans. Although I have given up most hope to find that any member of her
family survived the war, I wonder, does anyone know of any list I could
get my hands on relative to this topic? Thank You.

Searching: Yerachmiel (Robert) MINTZ #general

pavlik@mintz.net <pavlik@...>

Hi folks-

>from the death certificate and tombstone of my GGrandfather
Yitzhak (Isaac) MINTZ I have recently determined that my GGGrandfather
was named Yerachmiel (Robert) MINTZ.

Yerachmiel is rumored to have had 14 children. I believe that
he arrived in New York City in 1870, with at least part of his
family.

I'm still working through various sources looking for details on
Yerachmiel and his family. But with so many children, at least some
of whom were resident in NY, I'm hoping someone else will be able
to help. Anybody recognize the name?

Odessa #general

David Romney <romney@...>

Is there a SIG for Odessa (in the Ukraine)? There used to be such a high
concentration of Jews living there, including my maternal grandfather,
Benjamin Kapelevich.

Researching at the Television Museum #general

Vicki Karno <vkarno@...>

Armed with an obituary >from the NY Times, I had a list of movies, plays and
television shows
where actor/cousin Morris Carnofsky appeared. The Television Museum in
Beverly Hill (Beverly Dr.
at Little Santa Monica) is a great place to relive childhood moments as
well as research.
Going to the incredible computer library room I pulled up all the
television films available.
After ordering them, I proceeded to viewing cubicle which was mine for a
two hour period.
American Playhouse presents The World of Sholom Alecheim, starring cousin
Morris, Zero Mostel,
Molly Picon, etc. On a hunch, we checked out listings for Louis Armstrong,
who mentions
the Karnofsky family in his biography. Sure enough in 1979 Sachmo special,
during one of
the interview segments Louie talks about Mama Karnofsky teaching him to be
good to people.
He remembered her rocking baby David and all the children singing a lullaby
- which he scat
sang. What a thrill!

"Censuses of jews in Ukraine 1765-1791" #general

Yackov & Lena Berkun <berkun@...>

I found very interesting book in the library of Yad Vashem Museum:
"Censuses of jewish population in South- West Part in 1765- 1791.
Archives of S-W Russia, part 5", 2 volumes edited, by Kamanin I.,
1910,Kiev.
It contains a lot of statistical information about jewish societies in
these part of Poland, which later (1795) became a part of Russia
(Volynskaya, Podolskaya, Kievskaya gubernia).Thenit was 4 "voevodstvo"
(region): Kiev (including Kiev, Zhitomir, Ovtchutch "povet"-districts),
Volyn (Lutsk, Vladimir, Kremenets povet), Podol (Kamenets,Letitchev,
Tchervonograd povet), Bratslav (Bratsslav and Vinnitsa
povet).
Every jewish society in this huge region is listed, number of jews
living, belonging to "kagal". In each place there are first and
patronimic
names of 3 jews participating those censuses ( usualy between them rabi
and starosta of place).
To bad is that it was before jews used family names.

Re: People not found in the cemetery #general

Eric Fanwick <efanwick@...>

This problem can be helped with full participation in the International
Jewish Cemetery Project. Phase II allows you to browse through all the
names of a cemetery and
you will recognize the person you want when your find him or her.
What is this project? At the present time I am computerizing the record's
of my Shul's Cemetery and would be happy to include my records in a
centralized database.

LAPIDUS/LAPIDES/LAPIDOS/LaPedes/LaPidus/LAPIDOTH etc families worldwide.
Thanks to everyone for all their help by contributing to this database.

If there are any more Lapidus' (all spellings) out there who would like
to
be part of the database , or get some Lapidus information >from us, please
could they contact me and I will be more than happy to help.
The database has the name of the Lapidus person, Shtetle they come from
and

The earliest recorded Lapidus is 1770 and the most recent born is 1996.
There are 915 Lapidus names so far and more are coming in daily.

The purpose of this Database is to try to link some of the families. The
information on the Database is purely for people with Lapidus roots to
use
for furthering their family search, and cannot be put onto homepages or

Seeking ZARCHIN #belarus

A Waldinger <epic@...>

My name is Amy Waldinger. My family with the surname of ZARCHIN is from
Minsk gub., Ossipovichi, specifically. We find very little as a result
of the research done by Don Mopsick for BIG and that led me to believe
that we were originally not >from the Bobruisk area. It is apocryphal
that we may be >from Mogilev. However, ZARCHINs keep popping up all over
Belarus. I can only hope that somebody out there knows of this name.
BTW, in Russian it would be ZARHIN and there is a ZARCHI family in
Brooklyn with my same oral history who dropped the "in".
