The first thing a someone new to Jewish genealogy should do is read the
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) found on the JewishGen Web page at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/faq.html

Since you are interested in family >from Minsk, you should be aware that
the Mormon Church has filmed "some" of the vital records and revision
lists in the Minsk Archives. To find out more about these films please
read the JewishGen Info File found at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/by-rec.txt

In addition, you should be aware that Vitaly Charny has posted a number
of messages about surnames found in the various Minsk films. You can
retrieve these messages by going to the JewishGen Discussion Group
Archives found at:

http://www.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.isa?jg~jgsys~archpop

Once you are there type in Vitaly Charny and press start search. You will
be presented with a list of messages with the Subject of the messages.
If you see a subject of interest, just click on it and you will have the
full text of the message.

Joyce, please share any successes you have with this discussion group.

Varanno records
August 1, 1998

There are some military records or "muster rolls" for those researching
Vranov. The microfilm numbers are: 0629869 and 0629857 the Varanno
Synogogue numbers are 1794330-31. The military records show the son and
father's name, place of birth and current city of residence.

I learned >from the Mayor of Humenne (Zemplen county) that the records are
kept in Presov. Perhaps the Varanno records are also there. If you write
to the archives in Bratislava, I was told they would route them to the
appropriate local archives. Forms are available at the Mormon Family
History Library. I have a Mendel Roth in my family tree, living in
Tot Yablonka (Jablon today) about 16 miles north of Humenne.

I hope my microfilm numbers are correct, but please check them.

Good luck!

The JRI-Poland SIG mailing list has moved to the new server, and there
was a post to the SIG about it. I have seen no such post to the h-sig,
and, uncharacteristically, no messages today.

So, this is a test to see if our old email address bounces.

Sorry for the clutter in the mailboxes.

Kirovograd #general

We are looking for anyone who has possibly visited Kirovograd and may have
photographs of the town.

This information is for a new publication on Ukraine that will be published by
a well known author in the near future.

If you have any information, it would be very much appreciated if you would
contact me.

Thank you......Marjorie Goldberg

Two months vs. Two years #general

SarahLMC@...

I also have the same question. When in LA I found my great-grandfather's
(Fishel MEYER) arrival in the US in the book on Russian migrations to the US
in 1884. His wife Rebecca came later with their daughter Esther, since the
next child was born in 1888 in Albany, NY, she had to have come prior to 1888.
I found a Chaya MEYER and ESTHER MEYER in 1887. Now although the only name
that I have for her is Rebecca (Rivka) her name could well have been RIvka
Chaya or she could have changed it out of superstition (to fool the angel of
death as the voyage was dangerous). My other information said that Esther was
born in March1885 (which is consistent with Fishel's arrival in 1884), so she
would have been about 2 and a half in November of 1887. The passenger list
(as produced in the book) had Esther's age of .16 (or about 2 months). This
was the only Esther MEYER in the book. Any suggestions?

Researching the Motion Picture Library #general

Vicki Karno <vkarno@...>

After attend the Hollywood Chai session on researching a person
in the movie industry, I was anxious to give it a try. The Margaret Herrick Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
is located at LaCienega and Olympic. (333 South La Cienega,
Beverly Hills,Ca. 90211) The Library's holdings include books, periodicals and pamphlets, files of clippings, still photographs, screenplays and special archival research collections- all of
which are related to the motion picture industry and its history.
Requests for information and photos received by mail are handled
by The National Film Information Service at the Academy.

It is open to the public and has an old fashioned card file. I
looked up our relative, stage and screen actor Morris Carnovsky,
filled out a form, and was handed a file containing many original
newspaper clippings and reviews with several different pictures,
letters, and other information.
They copied everything in the file for 25 cents a page. We were
in and out in an hour with the most incredible information. They
have information and books on people connected to every aspect of
the industry.

Russian Army lists #general

Mitchell J. Block <m.block@...>

In researching my grandmother's family (KALINA) & shtetl, (Zambrov, eastern
Poland), I found out that some of the male inhabitants were actually
recruited into the Russian Army before the town was "invaded" by the
Germans. Although I have given up most hope to find that any member of her
family survived the war, I wonder, does anyone know of any list I could
get my hands on relative to this topic? Thank You.

Searching: Yerachmiel (Robert) MINTZ #general

pavlik@mintz.net <pavlik@...>

Hi folks-

>from the death certificate and tombstone of my GGrandfather
Yitzhak (Isaac) MINTZ I have recently determined that my GGGrandfather
was named Yerachmiel (Robert) MINTZ.

Yerachmiel is rumored to have had 14 children. I believe that
he arrived in New York City in 1870, with at least part of his
family.

I'm still working through various sources looking for details on
Yerachmiel and his family. But with so many children, at least some
of whom were resident in NY, I'm hoping someone else will be able
to help. Anybody recognize the name?
