Lomza: The Early Years #general

xls qlipb'x <salinger@...>

Is anyone doing research on Lomza 1790-1820 ?

If so can anyone help me with the effects of Prussian and French
occupation on the Jewish community there. Have read all the articles in
Landsman but am still none the wiser.

Many thanks
Ralph Salinger

Query Re: Ship manifest #general

Allison Duke <ald63@...>

My grandfather came on the SS Camponia 2/12/1898 and written in the
coulum that says No. of Contract Ticket (The left margin) there are all
these names written. And some look like just scribble marks. Can
anyone tell me what these stand for?

TIA,
Allison Duke

SATTLER #general

Ellen Sattler-Harpin <EHarpin@...>

Hello,
I am almost positive that SATTLER is the correct spelling of my gm's
maiden name as my father, thinking no one had survived the Holocuast in
his mother's family, changed his name to SATTLER. It was later
discovered that she had a brother who had survived and come to the USA,
and his name was SATTLER, same spelling. I've yet to find any other
SATTLER family who is Jewish. My gm was Anna Sattler, and her brother
was Sam SATTLER. They were two children >from a large family, at least 9
kids, and their father was Mendel SATTLER, m. Chaya Gella Jacobovitz.
My gm came >from Poland in approx. 1914-1916 and supposedly came alone.
By 1917, she and her husband, Abraham EPSTEIN, also supposedly from
Poland, whom I believe she married in NY, were in Chicago where my aunt,
Sylvia EPSTEIN was born on 5/17/17. My father was born in San
Francisco, Harry EPSTEIN, on 3/21/19. Any suggestions? Someone traced
a SATTLER to a cousin in Katowice, Poland, but she refuses to say
anything other than that everyone is dead.
Thanks!

descendants of Eli ASNER (OSNER) #general

I am seeking to locate descendants of Eli ASNER( in Europe possibly
OSNER), the son of Tzallel (my ggf). Eli was born near Vilna
(Eishyock-Nacca) and is thought to have left for Odessa to become a
cantor. Any suggestions on records of cantors would also be welcomed.

Where are Affidavit and Visa Records? #general

Jean A. Holz <jholz@...>

I recently sent a Freedom of Information form to:

Department of Justice
Immigration and Naturalization Service
425 I Street NW
2nd Floor ULLICO Building
Washington, DC 20536

Within one week, I had a return letter with a request for more information. I had
neglected to attach an obituary or death certificate. The form itself is simple to
complete. The more information you have, the more information they have to work
with. I received copies of every paper I requested >from the immigration/ship arrival
card, affidavit of intent to become a citizen, application for citizenship,
affidavits of witnesses, citizenship papers. I was thrilled to receive them.

On another note, the information I had about my other grandfather yielded a letter
saying the based on the information supplied, there were no records to be found. It
seems that my grandfather arrived prior to 1892 when he was naturalized. Records
would be in the county/state/district court, but no court I've checked has anything
on him. So, sometimes it's hit or miss. Don't get discouraged. When it's a hit,
its grand. Keep on searching.

On the back is some writing -- probably the name of the studio, but
possibly also other notes on who/when/where/etc. Unfortunately, it's in
Cyrillic (spel?), which I can't read. Does anyone know where I can get
it translated?
I would volunteer my services however my one year of college Russianis
embarrassingly far in my past.

I will point out that there are many recent emigrants >from "the former Soviet
Union" in the Bay Area. Try the Jewish Family Services, a JCC, or maybe
even the Russian Center in San Francisco. One of them might be able to
direct you to someone who could help.

As a last resort, we could see if any of that coursework >from over 30 years
ago managed to stick in my poor brain. I do have a couple of elementary
Russian-English dictionaries that you could use once the words are figured
out.

Good luck.
