just say that those who could not make it, please plan to attend the one in
New York next summer. There's something for everyone -- beginners and experts
and it's such fun meeting e-mail friends!!<<

It's always great to be appreciated, but in this case, we need to
clarify...The recent gathering in Los Angeles was not a JewishGen
project, but rather the hard work of the Jewish Genealogical
Society of Los Angeles, and it is to them we all direct our thanks
and appreciation. JewishGen, a completely separate organization
was merely part of the extensive list of presentors invited to
participate by the JGSLA.

We expect to be in New York when the 1999 seminar is hosted by
the JGSNY in August. See you all then!

The explanation i heard here, in Israel, is that everything
except rocks is mortal (f.e. flowers) - and only stones will
remain forever. So does our memory...
 Best regards,

This is very poetic, but probably not historically meaningful.

In many cultures (including ours) it is considered a good deed to take
care of burial of the deceased, for very rational reasons. Placing a
stone (rock sounds a little ambitious) on a grave is an expression of
this good deed, even if the occupant of the grave has been there for
centuries; it is grave maintenance, in that case.

 Hello all,

I recently noticed (don't remember where, but I believe it was JewishGen)
someone asked the origins of the name Tepermos - which was discovered to be
a Yiddish pottering measure. I was wondering if anyone knows the origin of
Tepper, Teper, etc., which I assume would be similar in some way to
 Tepermos.

Why is this difficult? German for 'pot' is 'topf', so that 'potter' is
'topfer' (with an umlaut over the 'o'). Yiddish is not very careful
with vowels, and certainly knows nothing about umlauts, so its
phonetic approximation is 'e'; it also routinely simplifies 'pf' to
'p'. That produces Tepper = Potter.

'Tepperman' is left as a home exercise.

Ages of child #general

Barbara C. Johnson <barbaracjohnson@...>

When I was viewing the 1920 Census, my aunt was listed as being 4
7/12...so I finally realized. The "7" was not clear and I was
trying to \figure out qwhat "4 /12" was. It may be that it was
a ministerial error. For instance, if it was the custom of
writing out the years and months of a young child's age, it may
also have been ordinary to write out also months and days, and
the two could have been mixed up. Like saying 2 and 10. One
person would think 2 months 10 days, another 2 years, 10 months.

Just a thought, Barbara

Searching for Vienna Business WWII - EISNER #general

JMGlazer@...

Dear Jewish Genners - this is my first posting, so forgive me in advance for
any errors. My great grandparents, Max and Regina Eisner ran or owned a
butcher shop in Vienna before and during WWII. The name of this butcher shop
was "Max Eisner Fleischhauer". This business was taken by the nazis around
1937/38 and my great-grandparents escaped to Palestine. To the best of my
knowledge, nobody has ever followed up to determine what happened to this
business. Any ideas of where I can start? Also, I would be very interested
in knowing if this butcher shop and more importantly, my great grandparents
sound familiar to those who lived in Vienna during those terrible times. Max
and Regina Eisner had two children Egon (my grandfather/Opa) and Lucy who also
escaped to Palestine. My grandfather Egon married Rosa Stadler (part of the
Stadler family escaped to Palestine and Switzerland) while the rest perished
in camps.

Thanks in advance for your help.
