JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Yes Jews like all men were "drafted" into the Russian Army during the Tsar's
time. My great grandfather ran >from central Ukraine for that very reason in 1904. He waited six months after his youngest child wass born and ran like the wind after that to get out before he disappeared into the Army. Interestingly I know he came alone to the United States and just recently I found his passenger list. I was very happy to see that he was not really alone. He was -- of course -- one of many in steerage but as I read down the list I see he came to a broker on the Lower East Side of New York. But the reall interesting part is how many men >from the same area/city were aboard the ship. I know he was not entirely alone in the world and I wonder if they ran in groups. Since thee were so many replies to the request for information on Central
Islip State Hospital on Long Island, I thought this would be of general interest even though I have already responded privately. from Ricki:Boy, did I ever open a flood gate when I asked about this place. I've received over 50 posts >from people who also are interested in what kind of information I can get >from CI. It must have been a repository for all sorts of "problem Your tale is a rather common one. My ggm was there for 25 years and died there in 1946. I live locally so I'm very aware of what the hospital was all about. It no longer exists today as a separate entity. There were 3 extremely large psychiatric hospitals on Long Island: Kings Park State, Pilgrim State and Central Islip State. CI was the oldest and largest. They have been greatly downsized and today exist as one. There is a medical records building that houses the records of all the patients. It is likely the person you are seeking has microfilmed records. If he died there, they should be able to provide a copy of his death cert. If you run into a problem with that, let me know and I can give you further leads. If you write or call the information below, they should be able to locate the records and tell you what they have. They can be quite cooperative or quite evasive. Ask for a photocopy of his admission card and any genealogical information found in the record. However, if you have specific information you want, such as descendents, be specific in your letter. They will probably ask for proof of relationship as they are extremely concerned about the legality of the privacy issue. There is extreme sensitivity on their part. Often, in the 1925 census there is an address given prior to admission. Central Islip State Hospital can also be found in the federal census for 1900, 1910 and 1920. It is located in Suffolk County, NY. I plan on building a database of all Jewish people who were in CI for all the census years. This is a very large project and I haven't really started the entering in my database. Hopefully, I will have a good chunk of it ready for the Summer Seminar in NY. PLEASE do not ask me to do a look up as at this point I would have to do the same search as you. As my database builds, I will post a notice on JewishGen and do look ups at that point. The interest in this posting is encouraging to get me moving on it! Lipto registers and Mormon records
#hungary
Henry Wellisch <Henry_Wellisch@...>
Regarding Jewish BMD registrations in Hungary, I tend to agree with
Maureen and Gyury that Jews in small localities without a Jewish community organization registered BMDs with the closest organized Jewish community. Indeed, I think Jews in Hungary during the 19th century were organized this way. I think that Linda’s assertion that there may be entries in the Christian records may be correct for Poland, but I have not heard of such cases in Hungary. In my own family my grandfather Simon Deutsch was born in Lebeny St. Miklos in 1855. Apparently there was no Jewish community there, so his birth was entered in the newly established register of the nearby Jewish community of Moson. For the first few years this register was kept by the local Catholic priest. Similarly my mother Jolan Deutsch was born in 1892 in Neusiedel am See ( Nezsider) now in the Burgenland, Austria, but formerly in Hungary. Her birth was registered in Kittsee-Gattendorf ( Kopczeny-Gata). Incidentally, according to my mother, her father gave her the name Josephine and she was known under this name all her life. However the registrar in Kopzceny entered her name on her birth certificate and register as Jolan and this was only discovered years later. My mother claimed that this occured because of the Hungarian Nationalistic tendencies of the registrar.

Old German Script and FALK, LOEWY, PLAUT, WOLF

I have just received >from a professional German archivist, a manual on reading
the old script. (He tells me, incidentally, that Hitler banned this script in the early 1940's because some fool had told him it was based on Hebrew script!) I haven't been able to open it yet. When I do, I might be able to make it available to others, unless it is copyrighted. In a message dated 98-08-25 23:59:58 EDT, you write: << Searching: ANDERSON, DANNENBERG, DEUTSCH, FALK, FISCHER, HAUK, HIMMELREICH, KLINE, LOEWY, PLAUT, ROSENBLATT, SCHAAN, SCHWABACHER and WOLF plus anyone else >> OK: the name LOEWY (for Levi) runs in my ancestral family in the 17th and 18th century, mostly in the village of Frensdorf but also in nearby Bamberg, and its other surrounding villages. Walter FALK of Nurnberg b. 1929, son of a dentist, was my closest friend in school. Now lives in a Chicago suburb. PLAUT was a kosher restaurateur whose premises adjoined our home on Zufuhrstrasse 8, Nurnberg. Sandy Levin <Sandy.Levin@...>
My great grandfather, Victor (Avigdor) KRAVITZ was born in Janova in
roughly 1865. He died in Chicago in January, 1951. His parents were Isiah and Leah Cyril KRAVITZ. He had a brother, who took the last name Garber when they moved to the USA, as his brother was a tanner. Victor KRAVITZ married Loni SCHNEIDER and moved to the nearby town of Droghichin, where they had Bessie, Sarah, Joe (Friedel), Meyer, and Jerry. All eventually settled in Chicago. Wondering if anyone out there knows of any other brothers or sisters of Victor KRAVITZ and what became of them. I am also trying to track down Leah CYRIL's maiden name. It may link me to a very large family tree of EISENSTEINs.
