FRENCH

Nee is French for "born" - Tieberger was her maiden name.

Vitebsk Izkor Book, on-line index of names #belarus

Ed Sternin <edik@...>

I have put up a provisional list of names, translated >from Hebrew, from
the Vitebsk Izkor book, at
http://www.physics.brocku.ca/~edik/Vitebsk/
There is a beginning of a "Shtetlink" page; I have lots of stuff I could
put up, but all on paper. I'll move it on-line as time permits.
The Izkor Index is the only link at the moment. Please, note that only
the above link is stable, the location/format of the Izkor index itself
may change in the future.

If you have suggestions/corrections, please send them to me,
<edik@...>

This especially applies to the index of names, as the translator was not a
native speaker of Russian or Yiddish, and so some obvious errors and
mistransliterations have crept in. As time permits, I will edit them out.

Cheers.

Jamesville Gate cemetary in Syracuse NY #general

Arnold Davidson <arnoldbd@...>

I am trying to obtain information on Nathan Abrams, who (according to his
published obituary) was buried on July 24, 1924 in the Jamesville Gate
cemetary in Syracuse NY. His wife, Sarah Abrams, may also have been buried
there in about 1905. I would be interesting in the location of the grave(s)
and particularly in the inscription(s) on the tombstone(s).

Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles #general

Gabor Zsolnay <gmz262@...>

This is a long shot, but did any JewGenners frequent the area of "Hollywood
and Vine" in Los Angeles in the 1930s and 1940s? If so, what was that
neighborhood like? Does anyone recall a bar or restaurant called "The
FireFly"? I am trying to determine whether it was owned by my
great-grandfather's brother--Samuel/Solomon FEIT and his daughter and son
-in-law Frances and Tom BLANCHARD.

Any leads?

re Printing out trees #general

Mjs312@...

We don't have that many, but our tree was still too large to show
at our family reunion in 1997. We pasted our individual sheets
together into one lengthwise sheet. My husband took a short
curtain rod with knobs on the end and rolled this sheet onto it
like a Torah scroll.
It was wonderful to see the faces of the family members as they
unrolled the trees to look for their own branches of the family.

Good luck!

Treblinka and Hrubieszonsic #poland

Mac lachlan <macl@...>

I had posted earlier to soc.genealogy.jewish, and received no reply. I
hope someone >from this list may be able to help me.

My father and family were >from Warsaw; his family had consisted of his
father, mother, four sisters, and one brother. His oldest sister was
married and delivered a baby shortly after Warsaw fell, Sept. 29th. My
father came to the U.S. in October 1938, as a means to continue his
education, and as a result, never saw his family again.

My father's brother, Sevek (Shyja Chaim) Grynberg was scheduled to
arrive in the U.S. in October 1939, but never was able to meet his
quota. In the first letter received by my father's sister, Sevek had
gone to a "work camp" in Hrubieszonsic, which was early 1940. Where or
what is this? I've not been able to find any information on this place.
Also, what happened to those who went to this "work camp"? Are there
any records?

Secondly, my question pertains to a list of deporations or names of
those exterminated in Treblinka. I am well aware that the Nazis razed
Treblinka upon advance of the Russian army, but what did the Nazis do
with their records? I have consistently been told that no lists exist
for Treblinka, and I cannot understand this as records do exist for
other death camps.

I have reached so many dead-ends in my endeavor to seek closure on what
happened to my family, and have been unsuccessful. (When in Israel, I
did place their names in the Hall of Names at Yad Vashem.)

If anyone has any information they can share or offer advice, I would be
sincerely grateful.

Thank you.
