JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

We are very pleased to announce the reactivation of the JewishGen College beginning the week of Oct.5th with "Creating a Webpage" Our instructor Mark Heckman is a lecturer and researcher in the computer science department at the University of California, Davis, where he has taught classes in web page design for computer novices. Mark is the webmaster for several JewishGen-hosted webpages (Sacramento JGS; Gesher Galicia and ROM-SIG; Volhynia, Gorodenka, and Kovel ShtetLinks pages), Because the envisioned outcome is a coterie of trained folks who will volunteer to create both Yizkor Book as well as ShtetLinks pages for JewishGen, this course has certain prerequisites: 1.) Participants must have a working familiarity with Windows or MacIntosh, knowing how to open and close windows, how to use a mouse, and other basic computer skills. 2.) They must also be familiar with using a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, and be comfortable with cutting and pasting text, with using multiple fonts in a document, and with other word processing features. 3.) The class will use a free program, called "Netscape Composer," to create and edit web pages. Netscape Composer is part of the Netscape Communicator package. You can obtain Netscape Communicator from the following page:< http://www.netscape.com/download/selectplatform _1_1.html> Be aware that Netscape Communicator is quite large and will take a while to download. Click on your operating system and follow the links to download and install Communicator on your system. The latest version is 4.06. If you already have Netscape Communicator version 4.0 or later you do not need to download it again. Netscape Communicator is also widely available >from different internet service providers, and on CD-ROM. Netscape Composer is a type of program called an "HTML editor." We will use Netscape Composer for three reasons: a.) Netscape runs on a wide variety of computers and operating systems so probably no student will be unable to use it; b.) Netscape is widely used and therefore many of you may already have it installed on your systems; and c.) it's free. There are many other HTML editors available, and most have very similar user interfaces. If you have another HTML editor, you can use that in the class but the commands will be different from those in Composerand you might get confused. We expect many students in this class, so there probably won't be time to answer questions about HTML editors other than Netscape Composer. 4.) The final prerequisite is the reason we're offering this course. JewishGen is desperately in need of volunteers who know how to create webpages for the Yizkor Book and the ShtetLinks Projects. We have more material waiting to be put online than our current volunteers and managers can handle. Since both these projects are extremely important to researchers, we can only turn to you, the users of JewishGen to help us out here. We're offering this course to provide you with a skill that you in turn will use to help us all. With that said, the final prerequisite is your promise that once trained, you will volunteer to help JewishGen get more and more material online. So, if you feel you meet all the prerequisites for this course, here's how to enroll: Send an email to listserve@lyris.jewishgen.org and say subscribe webpage <firstname> <lastname> enrollment will close on Sunday October 4th and class will start on Monday Oct. 5th The "lectures" will come to you just the way messages do >from any of our mailing lists. We expect a hefty crowd of enrollees and some very well trained volunteers to help JewishGen bring more and more information to us all! Carol Skydell JewishGen Operations

1848 Tax Census from Munkacs
#hungary
Louis Schonfeld <lmagyar@...>
Potentially exciting information awaits confirmation---
Rumors have been circulating to the effect that there exists an 1848 Census Tax Census of Munkacs. The Mormons had microfilmed it but had not classified it correctly. Here are some messages >from the information submitted to me about this "lost census" "She has confirmed that FHC film number 1529782 contains an 1848 tax census for Bereg County and that Munkacs appears on that film. SO called lost censuses now it appears got mislabled " "The FHC in Salt Lake has mislabled some Munkacs Censuses whereas the local FHC it appers has them "Film: 1529782correct." Hungary Taxation 1848 land records record 5 of 5 page 27 of 176 pages-->Bereg county " "Here is a sample of information >from that census: Od Beho Bela varos Munkacsuv na tri hodini putye Seto(j) (p)ity Kde Kolik Sto maje(?)i ponesze Fajzy-o dati mose otzibi muh ?us ctihneuti vimicri Kopa? zah n Beyyitaski Szuszitezuvi Szirty muhbi dosztate hrossa ?fto? 17 nihil That's the information presented to me so far. In the sample information the only word I recognize is varos which mean city. The document does appear to refer Munkacs. The remainder of the information seems to be in Czech, but I don't have any idea what the other words mean. I am still skeptical that this data has any genealogical useful data until I actually see names of Jews who might have lived there during that time. The only 1848 census that I am aware of is the all Jewish census of 1848 only a fraction of which currently remain. The Bereg County data was not among the records known to have survived the dislocations over the years UNTIL NOW - perhaps. I do know that the Szatmar county 1848 Jewish census was also not listed among those records that survived the years, but has "mysteriously" shown up recently in the Nyiregyhaza county archives; and for now that city is the only place where one can view that data. I look forward for additional information about this 1848 Census of Munkacs/Bereg. Louis Schonfeld Please visit our website at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Hungary/

Hoboken, NJ 1910 Federal Census
#general
A. E. Jordan
I have several pages >from the 1910 Hoboken Federal Census. (I would have
posted the names but our moderators seem to be frowning on that now.) If you are looking for someone >from Hoboken, New Jersey >from 1910 please let me know and I will tell you if they are on my pages. Conversely if you have some Hoboken pages could you do me a favor and look for anyone with the last name of JORDAN, (Jacob) JOSEPH, LUBASCH, (Otto and Tillie) PRICE or (David and Dora) LOWENTHAL. Because the 1910 Census is not indexed I tried the city directories and my family is not listed in the places the city directories say they lived -- go figure. Hence I am searching Hoboken strret by street right now -- feels like I am there walking the streets! Thanks for your help! Allan Jordan aejordan@aol.com

Is there anybody in Racine who can help me? I have the name of a cemetery
-Beth-Medrosh-Hagodal. Is it still open? I would very much like a photograph of the grave of a great-aunt. Her name was Etta Shovers and she died in 1946 and was the wife of David Shovers who was aged 75 at her death. I would also like to know whether he is buried next to her in which case I would like a photograph of that grave as well. I would be more than happy to reimburse any costs involved.
