Most of the hyperlinks are English accessible, or English only. It is
a most valuable site for genners and Jewish genners in particular. If
you read Hebrew, you can press a certain button and the gibbersih turns
into Hebrew.
Most of the time the Hebrew is simply a translation of the English or vice
versa.

Litvaks from Bielsk, Poland #general

AliAgins <aliagins@...>

David LITVAK lived in Bielsk, Poland up to the late 1920s. No info
from that time.
He had a large family. He was a twin to Avrom Litvak. Both men seem to
have had the same middle name Alter. Most of Avrom's children came to US
and so too his widow Hannah. They all came in at Baltimore. Hannah died
in or about 1932.
In the US most of them took the name GOLDBERG/GOLBURG ?? There was a uncle
that sponsered them. One brother and one sister remained in Russia..and
the brother Mikal was a soldier.
I'm looking for any info about this family.

Tana or Jana? #general

I just received a death certificate for Gabriel ARONSON born 1872 in Minsk,
Belarus. Its difficult to read what the informant put down for name of father.
On his headstone it looks like Abraham, which is what we thought, however on
the board of health records it says something like Tana or Jana ARONSON. Would
anybody be familiar with this as a name? Or could it be short for something?

Seeking information about the parents and paternal grandparents of Max
and Curt BONDY.
Max (1893-1951) and Curt (1894-?) were born in Hamburg, Germany
(possibly brothers?). The IGI lists a Curt as son of Salomon BONDY and
Marie LAUER.

Curt was a pyschologist, educator and author who began his career at
the Uni. of Gottingen, then at the Uni. of Hamburg (1925-33). Between
1933-40, he has involved in refugee work in USA and Europe and from
1940-50 was on the staff of the Pyschology Dept at the College of
William and Mary in Williamsburg Va., then returning to Hamburg Uni.

Max, in 1940, founded the Windsor School in Windsor Vermont, a
progressive, co-educational school with an emphasis on languages. In
1943, the school moved to Lennox, Mass. and after his death, it was
directed by his widow.

Any information about the BONDY's recent ancestors would be very much
appreciated.

Alternative surname spellings #general

Peter Blood <nowy@...>

I confused about alternative spellings of surnames on the Jewish side of
my family. For instance, I was always told that my Russian (Lithuania
and Latvia) g-grandparents were Rebecca REIMER and Max DAMESEK. Now I
have searched several times through Ellis Island passenger lists at the
National Archives but have never found them. Recently, a letter from
someone in the family referred to them by the names I have known, as
well as by Surah RIFKA and Itzik MENDEL. That's quite a difference - not
just a minor change in vowels. Now I understand that there are many of
these radical alternative spellings of surnames on my Jewish side. I
wonder if Max called himself Itzik MENDEL upon arrival in Ellis Island.

Could someone lease explain the reason for the difference in spellings?

There has been a slip up... And it's my fault!

When the first group of indices >from the new Jewish Records Indexing -
Poland / Polish State Archives project were released and added to the
JRI-Poland database just prior to the announcement at the Los Angeles
Summer Seminar, some Wyszkow data slipped between the cracks.

This has now been corrected and the indices for an additional 353 birth
records and 104 marriage records for the Wyszkow for the years
1894 to 1896 are now on-line.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause researchers who
have already placed orders with the Polish State Archives for
photocopies of Wyszkow vital records.
