Why You Shouldn't Give Up! #general

marjorie.rosenfeld <marjorie.rosenfeld@...>

I feel as though I've just been handed a treasure chest. All in the
same day, I received death certificates for my two paternal
grandparents, Morris STAMM and Sophie WEISSER STAMM, and a
letter >from a cousin I had written to. >from my grandfather's death
certificate, I learned that his father's name was Sam STAMM and his
mother's name was Mary. (Even though both these people died in
the Old Country and "Sam" and "Mary" must represent attempts on
the part of survivors to Anglicize what might have originally been
something like Shmuel and Miriam, I now have a starting point.)
from my cousin's letter I learned that my grandmother came >from a
village not too far >from Brody in Austrian Galicia (now Ukraine), where
my grandfather was from. I even found out how my grandfather and
grandmother met! A sweet New Year to all.

Sorry, lengthy poem deleted due to lack of space>>>>>>>

Researching: STAMM (Brody, Austria, now Ukraine), WEISSER (Vishniets,
near Brody), KOVARSKY (Vilna, Pale of Jewish Settlement, Russia),
JUDELSOHN (Neustadt, Suvalki, Russia, later Lithuania). These names
are those of my grandparents. All were born in the above places
between 1860 and 1880.

Thank you!

I have been meaning to write something like that for some time - only I
haven't had the time.

Not having much time is why it is of importance for me, that those who
reply to other messages DO NOT CHANGE THE SUBJECT.

In that way - as Itzhak.Epstein wrote - it is easy to get to the messages
that are of interest for you AND MORE IMPORTANT you can send replies if
need be at once.

Sometimes I find a message, I should have responded to several weeks/months
later, because the subject changed, so I skipped it for lack of time.

So I join Itzhak.Epstein in asking you to please keep the thread and not
change the subject.

Best regards

MYRA S DAVIS <myrabokpg@...>

Hi,
If you are looking for shtetls get the book called "Where Once We Walked"
It contains just about all of them with a population figure and the
long. and lat. so you can find it one the map. It will give you the km
from the nearest city.
Also the "Encyclpedia Judaica" is a great source as it lists the shtetls
and gives information about it.
Good luck,

Have you read the book "World of our Fathers" by Irving Howe?
He tells all about the Russian Jews and their immigration to the U.S
during the period of 1881 and on and the towns they went through. There
was no mention of the place called Yekaterinoslav.

To whom it may concern:

1) Happy New Year!!!

2) The last Jewish Geneology convention that I am aware of was
in Los Angles, CA in July 1998... When and where is the next?

3) Are there any Latvia SIG gatherings coming up?

4) My family also came >from Chudovo and Novgorod (both in Russia)
and then >from Germany... Are there any SIGs >from those areas?
If so, how do I contact them?

Regards,
Jack
