Searching: LESSER, KRZESINSKA, WILNER, WOLMAN, Warszawa, #general

Pawel Tomaszewski <petomasz@...>

Preparing the monograph of Prof. Jan Czochralski (1885-1953), famous
polish metallurgist and chemist, I have some questions to answer. Could you
help me ?

1. It concerns the aid of Prof. Czochralski offered to two Jewish women
during World War II: Leonora (or: Eleonora) LESSER and B. KRZESINSKA. I
don't know what was their residence before WWII. I suppose only that it
was Warsaw in Poland. Both were kept in hiding in the house of Czochralski
at the address: ul. Nabielaka in Warsaw (Warszawa), Poland. Could you help
me in verifying this fact ? How to find the families of those women ?
What institution could help in my search ?

2. I have also another problem concerning the last War. I am searching the
owners
(or directors ?) of the metallurgic wholesale firm "Graff S." (address
before the War:
ul. Grzybowska 10, Warsaw, Poland) - A. WILNER and M. WOLMAN. What happened
to those men ? Are the families living now in Israel ? During the War,
Prof. Czochralski according to the gentleman agreement, was a formal owner
of the "Graff S." establishment. He paid some money to the Warsaw Ghetto
(to former owners ?). Could you help me in the verification of this fact ?

Were those women and men saved >from Holocaust ? I will be grateful for any
information that would help me in finding their families. I wish to establish
contact with any of their descendants or relatives.

With the best regards

Dr Pawel TOMASZEWSKI

JewishGen needs your help to check town names #hungary

Carol Skydell <skydell@...>

In conjunction with our soon to be launched ShtetlSchleppers
program which will be an educational/research oriented/record
searching/information gathering trip to ancestral towns and
shtetls, Lou Schonfeld pointed out that there were many errors
in the towns we are listing. Because we are approaching the
Hungarian Minister of Tourism, Lou suggested that these
corrections could possibly be made by members of this SIG who
have reference books as sources of information. It's even
possible we have towns listed that are not any longer in hungary.
It's much too big a job for one person so if we can attract some
volunteers to tackle this task within the next week or 10 days,
it would be a major help. Please get in touch with me directly
and I'll email you a piece of the list. All I ask that you do
is copy and show the correct spelling of the town as well as
indicate the country if the town is no longer in Hungary.

Many thanks for whatever help can be given by as many as possible.

With the changing political boundaries of Russian/Prussian/Austrian
Poland, I think it would be helpful if someone published a kind
of map with transparent sheets of political boundaries etc which
you could lay over basic geographical maps with rivers, mountains,
lakes, etc.
Maybe it already exists?

Mogilev Podolskiy, Ukraine. #general

Can anyone out there who have already done some research in Molilev
Podolskiy, tell me where they got their information from. I went to the LDS
in central London and asked for information, and was told that they had
information only on Mogilev, Belarus "and it has to be the same,
dear".....When the information came, it was of course, totally useless.
Does anyone know if, in fact, LDS has the information that I require?
Thanks
Gillian Zebaida.

Another possibility is the Bronx Historical SOciety...they are
expanding now and will have even more accessible information
soon...it was an enjoyable visit..it's up near Montefiore Hospital.
They have microfilms of the local Bronx News....I believe the
42nd St Library has copies of a Bronx Jewish Newspaper. The
Jewish Theological Seminary on Broadway and about 122 St also
has a wealth of accessible information and helpful librarians.

On a similar subject, the WPA published a list of synagogue
memberships during the Depression...I found the book listing all
the synagogues whose membership they catalogued while browsing
in the Genealogy Div of the 42 ST Library, but have never been
able to find the 2 volume membership list of my grandparents'
synagogue, Sons of Eliezer, Moses and Machizey 497 E 139 St,
although I have written to Waltham, YiVO, Cincinnatti and the
Jewish Historical SOciety...does anyone have further suggestions?

what kind of name for a nice jewish.. #general

IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>

What is the derivation of the female name Eige?

And is there a particular affinity of the male name
Fischel for a preceding Ephraim or Yeroham, or does
it just seem that way to me?

Photographs for official purposes #general

David Ziants <davidz@...>

I was recently told by a second cousin who had heard >from his late
grand-mother that a photographer came to the shtetl of Narewka once a year
and took group photographs of the population for official purposes.

The period we are talking about is before 1910, and obviously this could not
have happened before photography was invented.

Does anyone know about this form of registeration of the population?
On what level of government was this authorised?
Did the photos survive, and if so >from where can they be accessed?

Searching the Jewishgen archives for: photo OR photograph OR photographer
didn't come up with anything.

PS. Anyone who has a specific interest in Narewka (in the Bialystok region)
can contact the mailing list: narewka@...
