I requested an ss-5 form last October (1997) and it took just about 8
weeks for the reply. Be patient.

Re: How to Reply to, or File, a JewishGen Digest Posting #general

H. Marshall Schaffner <hmssaba@...>

Another way is to just click on "reply to group" and type response, like
this one, and then delete all or portions of the message that your
responding to (as is the case below) and then send it. You can then avoid
the involved copy and paste approach. If you only want to respond to the
originator then click on "reply to sender" and so forth.

How to reply to a message that appears in JewishGen is easy: You just
click on the address (provided, of course, that it appears in blue with
a line under it, as it does in my Digest messages). > Regards--

Re: NARA & SSDI Order #general

Jeanne Gold <JeanneGold@...>

I know that the wait is long in many cases, but shouldn't I receive
some notification that my request was received?
I've made several requests over the past 1.5 years ... and nay a
confirmation of receipt, but I've eventually received a response.

I read one
person's post, in which they sent the new form (which 'demands'
response in 10 days), and after three weeks, the requester wrote
(or ?called) asking to know if anything had been done. He
received the info after another few days. Should I call and check
on progress? Or write them?
I suspect it won't do much good. 2 or 3 weeks ago I received a phone call
from SSA because they wanted to know if I would accept a computer extract
for the records I wanted. The woman explained that they were extremely far
behind with the massive increase in requests. She also explained that
although they were the processing center, they actually had another office
to which they had to request the actual records (maybe their own archive?).

FYI: If you request a computer extract of the record, you will get a faster
turn around. However, and I don't remember the year cut-off, records
preceeding a certain year do NOT contain parents information in the
computer records. (The year had to do with when the person applied for
their SS5; SSA is computerizing old records, but only the basic
information, such as name, SS#, birth date, death date, last res ... the
same information that is in the SSDI). "Newer" entries (such as one done
today) contain all the information supplied on the application.

Regards,

Jeanne

Dear Marcia

Does anyone know if there are any
records for the ships arriving at Vera Cruz around this time?
I have been doing some research for a friend and ordered an LDS film for
passenger arrivals into Galveston, Texas. Vera Cruz ship arrivals were also on
that film. I don't know if that is a consistent pattern but you could check it
out.

Dear Yigal Rechtman,

I tried going to the site suggested -- I even typed in Http:// but I

For those interested, an interesting write up by Rachel Eskin Fisher, a

I am seeking to have contact with persons by the name of TEPERBERG or
descendants in or >from Jerusalem, Israel. Also, another affiliation is
from the TEPERBERG WINE & LIQUOR COMPANY still in Jerusalem.
Legonsky/Legon.....I would anticipate that most came over >from Russia and

many in the U.S. I am seeking contact with them as I believe that we may
be related. My great-great grandfather had four (4) wives and children

Thanks for the help.

Re: NARA & SSDI Order #general

Corin Goodwin <corin@...>

From: "David Gershon Leventhal" <David_Gershon@iname.com>
Back in the beginning of September, I sent a request to NARA for
a ship passenger arrival record, and an SSDI request. In both
cases, I supplied the information and / or fees they requested,
yet I have received no response >from NARA or the FOIA since. I
know that the wait is long in many cases, but shouldn't I receive
some notification that my request was received?
Not necessarily. It took *months* for them to get back to me, and then
(unfortunately) it was with bad news -- they couldn't find any of my
requested info.

You can certainly try calling or writing again -- it can't hurt -- but
the long wait seems pretty standard.
