Searching: WOLK-BRENNER connection #general

I don't know what became of the WOLK connection other than this one. Does it
sound familiar?...

Related through my grandmother's maternal grandmother, Rycha WOLK FRANK, there
was my grandmother's close friend and cousin Bessie WOLK who married a
BRENNER. They sold fish at a store on Havemeyer Street in NYC after living in
Philadelphia, the early part of this century. They had no daughters and a lot
of sons. Bennie, the youngest worked as a garment industry "cutter" and Israel
(known as "Jack") ran several drug stores as a manager in Altlantic City and
other parts of NJ; Babs (m. Sylvia) was in the printing business as was Davy
and Sam. Only sweet Bennie is believed to be alive. He was said to have
married badly and my father thinks he's working as a night watchman now (in
his seventies) and living in Queens, NYC.

H. Marshall Schaffner <hmssaba@...>

Initially I'd like to thank those that responded to my inquiry via
newsgroup and by private email. Based on the information supplied to me
from this newsgroup, then further review of tombstone pictures, and
discussions with family members I have the following to offer:
Stan Goodman supplied me with the information about "patronymic" names.
Sure enough when I asked family members, I found out that it was the custom
of my father's generation (all immigrants) for at least one son to take on
the father's Hebrew name after the father's death. It usually was the
eldest son and the other son's would add, as a middle initial, the first
letter of the father's name. For example one of my siblings informed me
that my father added the letter H. after his father Hirsh's death. (i.e.
Samuel H. Schaffner) This is reflected in four branches that are related as
first cousins.

Chaim Freedman's information ties into the tombstone inscriptions for my
father and each of his cousins that I have been able to locate. While in
life they took on their father's Hebrew name as a second name or initial,
that adopted Hebrew name is not reflected upon their respective tombstones.

I was wondering where I might get information that might lead me to
living relatives of a brother of my great-grandmother. This brother
was believed to be a general in the Soviet Air Force. Does anyone have
any ideas about this?

Have any of you come accross the name of Vipman (we think this was the
spelling) although the spelling adopted once the family was in England was
Whippman. We believe that Isaac Vipman was the eldest son, born in Latvia in
about 1880. He was in England for the birth of his first son by December
1901. Isaac Vipman married Yetty Israelson who was probably born in 1976 (5
years or so older than her husband). Isaac Vipman had several siblings who we
believe were called Rebecca, Yettie, Wolf and two others whose first names
we have not been able to establish. The family went to different destinations
after leaving Riga including South Africa, England/Wales and the USA. Can
anyone help in this seach. Thank you.
