Bagoon in Israel #general

arthur jacobs <kingart@...>

I am looking to find relatives of my grandmother Ida BEGUN who
emigrated to NYC around l910 >from Minsk Gubernia with her sister
Sarah. Her two brothers both rabbis went to Palestine. One
became well known and is buried in a children's cemetery there.
My grandmother's family was very religious and she married
Michael SINGMAN in l913, while her sister became a NEWMAN.

We know of only one relative there - Ora BAGOON - who we last heard
from twenty years ago when she was in the Israeli army and had just
married someone name WEITZMANN ( or something of a similar name)

I don't know how many relatives we have in Israel but if we could renew
contact this would this side of the family I am sure there are a number
of them. Any help you can give me by researching phone directories or checking records would be of great help.

Thanks for your help and I eagerly await replies.

SCHAECHTER from Constantinople #general

Peter Janovsky <pjanovsky@...>

My grandmother, Rebecca SCHAECHTER, was born in Constantinople,
Turkey in 1885, one of eight children born to Berthe Schaechter and
her husband in the last half of the 19th century. I believe that her
husband (my great-grandfather) was named Eliezar Schaechter and was
a rabbi in Constantinople. He may have been born in Palestine.
I believe that my great-great grandfather was also a rabbi.

They were Ashkenazi Jews who apparently lived in the Galata section
of Constantinople. My grandmother and her brother and sisters were
educated in schools set up by the Alliance Israelite Universelle.

The following are the dates of birth I have been able to obtain:

Rebecca Schaechter: April 2, 1885
Israel Schaechter: February 2, 1876
Miriam Schaechter: February 20, 1882
Raphael Eskenazi (Miriam's husband): February 28, 1879

What resources can you recommend for finding out more about my
family in Turkey?

Thanks for your help.

Searching SINGFER Descendents #general

Joel Shedlofsky <jtz007@...>

I am seeking the descendents of Alexander Sasha SINGFER (1860?-1933?) and
Ester Aster LEARPOLD (1860?-1938?). Of their seven children (please
forgive me for misspelling names), one emigrated to the United States
--Chaim Heinrich Singfer and one to Israel -- Arieh Leav Singfer
(1899?-1949?). My wife is a granddaugher of Chaim Heinrich who changed his
name to Henry SENFKOR. As I understand, Arieh Leav married Ahoova Louisa
Pishar and had the following children: Chaim, Ze'ev, Shalom, Dov, and
ALEXANDER. Chaim and Zilph OTSEAL had the following children: Osnat,
Yaron, Anat, Adva, and Rotem. Ze'ev and Hannah VISHINSKY had the following
children: Ariella, Oded, and Alice. Shalom and Sara ZELZNAH had the
following children: Ophria and Yitzchak. Dov and Shoshana LAZER had the
following children: Arielle and Ehuc. Alexander and Devora NEGTAR had the
following children Daphna and Arieh.

Some of these individuals have been in contact with my wife's uncles
William and Leonard Senkfor. Unfortunately, both have not given me names
and addresses. I wish to share extensive genealogy information with them.

POLISHOVSKI/HALEVI - Little Russia information please #general

Lea Myers &/or Sue Harrington <angon@...>

My gfather's surname was Myer POLISHOVSKI, later changed to Myer MYERS.
I have been unable to find any other Polishovski's, and do not know
where he came >from in Russia since the information on census records and
naturalisation papers just say Little Russia. My great uncle recently
told us that his father made up the name Polishovski when leaving Russia
so that he would be able to get across the border more easily - my uncle
did not know what his father's name had been previously. Jewish marriage
records state that his hebrew name was Myer HaLevi. Does this mean that
his family name would have been Levi or HaLevi?

If anyone has any idea about this, or perhaps some idea of where he might
have come >from in Russia (Berdichev perhaps?), I would be pleased for
some ideas.

Please reply directly to me at angon@...

thanks

Dear Belarus SIG Members:

On my web site for Mir, Belarus is an index of names that appear in the
book entitled "The History of the Mir Yeshiva.=B2
http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~rkimble/Mirweb/MirYIndex.html There are 791
names of people, associated with the Mir Yeshiva.

Rick Saffran, whose ancestors came >from Mir, transliterated the entire
index. He indicated those names that also appear in Neil Rosenstein's book
"Latter Day Leaders, Scholars and Sages."

"The History of the Mir Yeshiva" is written in Hebrew. Neither Rick nor I
have a copy. If you do, and are willing to translate portions, please
contact me.

I would very much like to order documents in advance but I'm afraid no
one has answered my very first email which is where in Vitebsk can I
start to find information on my grandmother Haia or Clara
ALENIKOFF/ALEJNIKOV/ALENIKOV/ALEYNIKOV who was born, I believe, on 14th
September 1902 in Vitebsk. I'm also after further information on her
first husband she married in Vitebsk, Michael BLUSTEIN/BLAUSTEIN who she
married in 1918.
