Kherson Agricultural Colonies #general

Judorican@...

I am working on a project to find descendants of Jewish, Catholic and Lutheran
settlers in agricultural colonies established in the early 19th century in
Kherson, Ukraine. My plan is to trace several families >from each group from
their migration to Kherson, through the colony period to migration to the U.S.
The end result will be an exhibit looking at the similar and very different
experiences of families who occupied land in the same area under similar
terms for a specific period of history. My own people came >from Lithuania in
1807 and were part of the colony of Izraelovka, near the town of Krivoy Rog,
north of the city of Kherson. If anyone knows that their ancestors came to
Kherson as part of the agricultural settlement program and would like to be
part of this project, please contact me directly. I am particularly interested
in finding Jews who now live in Minesota or nearby. Thanks,
Aurora Levins Morales

Ukraine to Lvov #general

Michael Nevins <mnevmd@...>

After the Russian Civil War many Jews living in Ukraine fled into
Galicia and gathered in Lvov before moving on. I'm interested in
learning how and why they went there, how they sustained themselves and
what was life like for them during that interim period. Any suggestions
about where to obtain information?

Jonathan Goldmacher recently asked about the given name
Eber.

Noted expert Rabbi BenZion Kaganoff lists variants of Eber

Does anyone know in which synagogue a person would have gotten married if they
had lived in Mile End, London around 1880s. Thank you, Pamela Larsen

Winnipeg Jews #general

Judorican@...

I am attempting to trace a family of Levines who lived in Winnipeg after
WWII and who came >from the agricultural colony of Izraelovka in Kherson,
Ukraine.
The older man who migrated >from there was born in the 1870's and knew my
ggparents who were born in the 1880's. I am looking for his descendants
who were in contact with my family in the late 40's and had information
about the shtetl. Does anyone have contacts in the Jewish community
there? I need local knowledge about Jewish organizations that might help.
Thanks.

2 Shtetl's In Close Proximity on Map! #galicia

Wildpom@...

I noticed that two of our members who posted messages this week are
researching towns that are quite close in proximity. The 1st posting
was for Podwoloczyska by NFatouras@aol.com. The 2nd posting was for
Grimaylov by ronruss@ix.netcom.com

Checking my map I would estimate that the distance between the two
towns is only 10 to 12 miles. Perhaps these two researchers could
check further using the ShtetlSeeker and then contact one another to
compare notes. Just a suggestion!

It would be interesting to see some messages posted about the type of
maps that members are using for their research. I personally keep one
in a looseleaf binder that I refer to practically everyday. It covers
most of Galicia with Lvov in the center and highlighted in bright
yellow marker. Also highlighted are the shtetls I am researching.
The names are always such a challenge but little by little...one day
at a time... they're starting to become very familiar and when close
in proximity, they're close to my heart.

Re: A RAPAPORT success story #galicia

Shelley K. Pollero <rpollero@...>

Please make corrections to Naomi Fatouros' post about the RAPAPORTS:

FIRST: "the name of my grandfather's mother was "Beila Shifra
Meerovna" not, as it appeared in the published form, "Beila
Sheerovna."

SECOND: An important sentence was omitted >from this paragraph:

"I later learned that there was a Yizkor book for this town,
and still later, thanks to the efforts of Jewishgenner Michael Chen,
I not only acquired the book at a reasonable price, but also
Michael's translation of the RAPAPORT chapter in the book. Michael
also learned >from Dov Breier of the Podwolochisk Society in Israel
that the widow of the writer of the chapter, Arieh RAPAPORT, was
still alive, and he gave me her address."

In addition, Naomi writes:

The name of Rivka RAPPAPORT's eldest son, the one who wrote in
response to my postal letter to his mother, is Ze'ev RAPPAPORT.
from his email address, I assume he is living in Germany, and again
from his email address, he probably works for the EL AL airline.
from the email address of his brother, whose first name Ze'ev forgot
to mention, I assume the brother lives in Israel.

might help you. We are also looking for ZILBER, so pls keep us informed.

RAAFF/RAAF/RAFF (South Africa) #general

Graham Sanders <gsanders@...>

I am currently researching my family's origins and have had several
references to the above spellings as possibilities. The RAAFF family
arrived in New Zealand c1910, but I can find no reference to them in
South Africa.

Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated. Many thanks

Berl Katzenelson #general

Miriam Deitcher <deitcher@...>

My grandmother Leye Katzenelson says she's related to the famous Berl
Katzenelson. I have a fairly extensive tree for the Katzenelson side of
my family, but have not yet figured out where Berl fits in. Does anyone
know where I might find biographical information on Berl Katzenelson?
Thanks.
