Minsker Old Men's Benevolent Assoc. #general

MEL OSHINS

Dear Jewishgenners, I am looking for some information on the following:

I have Hyman BLOOM Born Aug 15 ,1871 Minsk, Russia (I don;t know if he was
really born in Minsk or somewhere near there. ) Died abt 1954 in
Metropolitan Jewish Old Age Home in Coney Island, NY. He was a member of
Minsker Old Men's Benevolent Assoc. The date of death may have been 1955.
I don't know where he is buried.

He came to the U.S. in 1891. At some time he changed his name >from OSHINSKY
to BLOOM. Not known if he changed it before of after arrivng in America.

There is a Marriage Certificate # illegible, for a HYMAN OSHINSKY, dated
3/20/1896. It could be him before he changed his name. ??? Is the Coney
Island Old age home still there and is the Minsker Assoc. still in
business?
Any suggestions or information appreciated.

Rabbis as Reverends #general

Rachel Heimovics <rachelheimovics@...>

The term "Reverend" in 1909 Cook County and elsewhere was often used for
any religious professional. Thus, "Reverend" as a Jewish designation might
refer to a rabbi, an unordained rabbi (not unusual among immigrant
congregations), a cantor, a shochet, a mohel, etc.

SSDI requests #general

joan breslow <webjoan@...>

If the person(s) you are looking for, are found on the internet site
SSDI, under Ancestry.com -

On the right-hand side of the info. on the indiv.you are checking on, is
a box designated "Write letter." Click on that, and a form letter, with
your indiv. and info. already imprinted. Just follow the bouncing ball
per instructions. Takes time, but no def. time frame, >from my experience.

Send your $7.00 per request, or in the event of multiple names/requests,
send one check, and on _each_letter, note the chk. #, and the fact that
the encl. check is for all request. Works quite well.

Have fun.

Reported Ages on Passenger Lists #general

Sally Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>

My great grandmother came to the US alone-first class in 1859. She is
listed on the passenger list as 8 years and younger-which I assume means
lower price. She was 11 according to her birth certificate. My Mother did
the same thing-when we flew I was always 12 even if I was 20!

By the way, my great grandmother's mother had died, and she was coming to
an Aunt and Uncle after her father remarried.

Viennese archives #general

I have been trying to identify a number of people who lived in
Vienna before the Holocaust. On the advice of several
jewishgenners, I wrote the State Archives in Rathaus, specifically
asking for parents' names, places of birh and periods of
residence in Vienna.

The letter which arrived today did not include places of residence
or parents' names. Is this information which they would have and
didn't share with me - and therefore might respond to persistency -
or information which they simply do not have?

Birth Year Mistakes #general

David Goldman <davic@...>

My grandmother and my family always said she was born in 1900 in Canada. I
think this was an issue of vanity, since she was actually born in 1899 in
Russia. I think I remember hearing that she didn't want to say she was born
in the 19th century and in Russia. What's a year here or there?! In her
case she was 3 or 4 years old when she came to Canada with her family: a
minor fib......

I recently encountered this name in the JRI-Poland database on the index

other names is Eber "related" to? Is it a diminutive or version of
Abraham?

Eber is the g-g-g-g-grandfather of Abraham. The term Hebrew traditionaly
means the descendants of Eber.

In modern critical theory, the brief mention of Eber and his people is
sometimes seen as another version of the Abraham legend, and thus the name
Eber may be a diminutive of Abraham.
