Date

Nonexistent London birth certificate, 1897 #general

David Gordon <dgordon@...>

I am having an unexpected and somewhat confusing problem that I am
hoping someone with more experience can help me solve. My
great-grandparents emigrated >from Lithuania to England late in the 19th
century (I do not know exactly when). They were married in London in
1894--I have a copy of their marriage certificate. They had six
children, the first five of whom were born in London. I have a birth
certificate for the oldest son (1893!). My grandfather was supposedly
the second child--everything >from death certificate to social security
records to family records agree that his birth date was Nov. 30, 1897.
The problem is that, despite two separate searches conducted by two
different people, no one in the records office can find any record of
his being born at all between 1895 and 1899.
I could, of course, search an earlier or later period--and suspect
that may ultimately be the easiest solution. Still and all, I find this
perplexing. Should I? Any thoughts or comments?

HELP NEEDED IN FRANCE #general

EDrezner@...

Hello
i 'm french and living in Paris
and i need help in Paris, (funny, isn't it?)

i need any idea or connection with an attorney, in Paris because...

i receiced >from the person who, living in Poland, help me in my genealogical
researches, 2 papers to give her my power to look in the Polish Archives, USC
and AP at my place.
this is also the "traditionnal" autorisation needed and paid to the Polish
archives to find our ancestors in this country
The fact is that :
- the 2 autorisations, mentionning her name and adress is written in English (
because it's easier for her to find a translation in Poland >from english
than in french)
- she said to me that these 2 papers must be completed by my own coordinats
and completed and certified by an attorney
After i return the papers fully completed, she will make it translate in
Polish and certified by autorities, so she will have the autorisation to work
officially in the Polish archives(USC and AP)
till now, she worked for me with others searchers's autorisation.
BY THE WAY , I' M LOOKING FOR AN ATTORNEY IN PARIS, USED TO THESE DOCUMENTS
AND USED TO ENGLISH TOO!!!!!
Does anyone, in his reserches, had to pass this paper problem, which is
simple, but the ways are complicated?
Please, any idea will be welcome, 'cause i'm stopped for a while just because
she hasn't my official power and Polish autorisations to have access to my
ancestors destiny and fate.

hope someone , in France, knows what to do

First Class Passenger Immigrant Question #general

NormK12065

JGenrs,

I am looking for a relative that supposedly had enough money to immigrate as a
first class passenger. I was told he did arrive at Ellis Island in 1912 but I
am unable to find him in the soundex index. Did first class passengers have
to go through the same procedures as steerage passengers at Ellis Island?
Would there be record somewhere else of the first class passengers?

Thanks for any insight.

Vecker is "waker". Nowadays (and probably in the past), yeshivos have

students in the dormitory are awakened in time to get to the morning

Re: Russian Brotherhood - St. Paul, MN #general

Mike Posnick

To Sue Leibovitz Schudson and the Group:

The Russian Brotherhood congregation no longer exists. It was one of the
several Orthodox congregations in St. Paul's old West Side Jewish
community. (BTW, St. Paul's West Side is not located in the western part
of the city but in the southern part, to the bemused delight and
consternation of Minneapolitans, who never have been able to figure out the
street system in their sister city.) The congregation is mentioned in
Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut's book, "The Jews in Minnesota," published by the
American Jewish Historical Association in 1959. The congregation's records
may be held by the Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest, 1536
Hewitt Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota 55104, (651) 523-2407.

The Russian Brotherhood congregation left behind a cemetery, which is now
part of the Westside Hebrew cemetery in St. Paul. (The cemetery is not
located in St. Paul's West Side, despite its name, but in the northeast
section of St. Paul. Another example of why Minneapolitans are so confused
by St. Paul.) You may contact me privately for the name and telephone
number of the person with the records for the cemetery.
