The entire immigration >from the Russian Empire in 1880-1910 years counted
about 2 million people. It was almost pure Jewish immigration - more then
80% immigrant each year were Jews. Before 1880 this percent was around
10%, after 1910 percent fall to 30...50%. That time Russian Empire
included Poland and Finland.

Need Help with Research in Pyetrykau, Belarus #general

Ricki L. Zunk <rickiz@...>

I have finally learned of the birthplace of my father's mother. She was
Basja FRIEDMAN, and she was born in Pyetrykau which is now in Belarus.

She arrived in the Port of NYC on October 28, 1912, aboard the SS Czar,
alone. And went to live with "landtsmen" in Brooklyn, NY.

She left her parents, and one brother (that we know of) behind in
Pyetrykau. Her parents were: Aaron FRIEDMAN (a riverboat captain) and
Faga SCHNIEDERMAN. Her brother was David FRIEDMAN. Since my pgm could
not read or write, she had no contact with her family in Pyetrykau. She
also kept nothing of an informative nature about her past, except for a
photograph of her mother and father.

My father has always hoped that perhaps someone >from the family in
Russia may have survived and lived to have descendants. Unfortunately,
with FRIEDMAN being such a common name, I have not been able to get any
leads at all on what may have happened to the family.

Is there anyone reading this post who knows of anyone >from the town of
Pyetrykau or anything about the town (I already know where it is located
-- I need more information)?

I hope someone can help me with this one.

Thanks,
(Mrs.) Ricki Randall Zunk

re Steamship Arrival Dates #general

Carol Skydell <skydell@...>

Cindy asks:

.... does anyone know which would be more accurate, the INS index cards or
Cimorelli?

Cimorelli uses Morton Allan Directory of European Passenger Ship Arrivals
to create it's database. Morton Allan is known to be off in some cases,
and by as much as a week. Go with what the INS provided, it's probably a
safer bet.

Yad Vashem #general

Sallyann Sack <sallyannsack@...>

Dear Colleagues,

A full report on the Yad Vashem project to computerize all of its lists
of names into a single database starts on page 4 of most current issue of
AVOTAYNU [Vol. XIV, No. 4, Winter 1998].

A more detailed listing of its genealogically valuable holdings may be
ofund in the book Jewish Genealogical Research in Israel by Sallyann Sack
and the Israel Genealogical Society (Avotaynu, 1995).

The most recent report I have had >from Yaacov Lozowick is a reprint of a
recent Associated Press item saying that Yad Vashem has forwarded one
million computerized names to the Volker Commission which is
investigating the unpaid Swiss bank account.

Re: Reading gravestones #general

Rica Goldberg

Dear Genners

Today, I have spent a few hours in an old cemetery in a suburb of Manchester
looking for, and finding, the gravestones of my maternal great-grandparents.
My grandmother was one of their 9 children all born in Europe. 8 came to
Manchester including, strangely enough, the five children of one of their sons
who was murdered in Europe.

On my great-grandfathers tombstone it was written that he was Iddle (Adokph)
Kaminsky the son of Nachamed (Nun, Chess, Mem, Yud, Daled). I am not familiar
with this name. Is anyone else?

His wife was the daygther of Moisha and her name was Mirat Rifka. I have
never heard of the name Mirat. I know there are many of you who understand
the origins of these names and I would like to hear more on Nachamed and
Mirat. Many thanks in anticipation.

Name and Canada Information #general

Len Pincus <lennyp@...>

Thanks to the efforts of one great New York Jgenner I now have photos of my
Grandparents gravestone. Surprise was that Bubby had a middle name but I
can't figure it out. (left to right) Shin Aleph Shin Ayin. Anyone care to
come up with a translation?

A Canadian friend remembered that his mother came in through Halifax NS in
about 1912. How would I find the manifest? I know how to find US ship data
but not Canadian data. BTW these people settled in Canada and raised a
large family there.

Nonexistent London birth certificate, 1897 #general

David Gordon <dgordon@...>

I am having an unexpected and somewhat confusing problem that I am
hoping someone with more experience can help me solve. My
great-grandparents emigrated >from Lithuania to England late in the 19th
century (I do not know exactly when). They were married in London in
1894--I have a copy of their marriage certificate. They had six
children, the first five of whom were born in London. I have a birth
certificate for the oldest son (1893!). My grandfather was supposedly
the second child--everything >from death certificate to social security
records to family records agree that his birth date was Nov. 30, 1897.
The problem is that, despite two separate searches conducted by two
different people, no one in the records office can find any record of
his being born at all between 1895 and 1899.
I could, of course, search an earlier or later period--and suspect
that may ultimately be the easiest solution. Still and all, I find this
perplexing. Should I? Any thoughts or comments?
