Just a note to correct one annoying error repeated in too many postings:
A groom is a man (or boy) who tends, feeds and/or curries horses; a
bridegroom is a man who has just been, or is about to be, married. End
of English lesson #1. Happy Pesach to all.

Naturalization Petitions - National Archives - Varick St. NYC #general

arthur jacobs <kingart@...>

Dear Group,
I think I might hold the record for the fastest reply >from the
government. Last Tuesday,
the day before Passover, I sent away for my grandfather's naturalization
papers and
lo and behold on this past Saturday I received first and final papers
for his naturalization
petition. Ofcourse, I had the Certificate of Citizenship to give them
and the date and the
place of citizenship..

Although my grandfather who arrived during the blizzard of '88 in NYC
did not remember
the name of the ship and date (understably as he was just fours years
old) I got the month
and year and learned that he came >from Vilna.

But he put down that my grandmother, his wife, came >from Pinsk, Poland,
Russia. My grandmother had always told us that she had come >from Minsk
Gubernia. My question is was Pinsk ever part of Minsk Gubernia.

On the map it looks like it should be in the Grodno Gubernia.
Can anyone clarify this for me? Is it possible that with the different
changes in rule -
Russian, Polish, Belarussian, it might at one time been part of the
Minsk Gubernia.?
My grandmother arrived around l910 and the petition of naturalization is
dated l926.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated?

Soc Sec Death Index Answer #general

Joel Ives <jives@...>

In response to Tom HENNIE's question about deceased people for whom no
benefit was paid, it should be understood that you can still request the
SS-5 form.

The fact that the person you are searching for is not included in the
on-line databases does not mean that you won't receive the SS-5.

For example, on a long shot, I requested the SS-5 for David JANCU who is
not included in any Soc Sec database. I wrote to the Soc Sec Admin with
the only information I had; his name and the fact he lived in Brooklyn
and died sometime between 1940 and 1960. I received his SS-5 about 6
weeks later.

If the person you are looking for has a common name like David Cohen
obviously, this technique will not work.

I have wondered >from time to time what percentage of Soc Sec records are
listed in the on-line databases. Perhaps someone with contacts with the
Soc Sec Admin can answer this question.

Re: Warsaw Ghetto Uprising #general

glenda rubin <glenda.rubin@...>

Kibbutz Yad Mordechai, about 10 kilometers south of Ashkelon and a few
kilometers north of the Gaza Strip, was founded by Polish Jews, and is
named in honor of Mordechai Anielewicz, the leader of the Warsaw Ghetto
uprising.

The kibbutz has a museum devoted to the 1948 siege of the kibbutz and the
holocaust in general, and, I believe, the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in
particular. Sorry, I don't remember details; it's been many years since
I was there. They may have specifics you're looking for. I do not know
what research facilities may be available, and I don't know if they have
a web site. I believe the kibbutz address is: Kibbutz Yad Mordechai,
D.N. (stands for rural post) Ashkelon, Israel.

Hope that might help.

friends,
I recall someone searching for information on the Knights of Pythias. My Dad
belonged to the Queens, NY chapter which meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of
each month at CastleHall Temple Beth Shalom, Northern Blvd. & 172 Street,
Flushing, NY. (and we still get the newsletter after 15 years!) They have a
cemetary committee and a bunch of committees. The editor of the newsletter is
Steve Zornberg, : STEVIEZ19@aol.com

For cemetary information, my grandfather, Fred Gelberg, who was of Roumanian
ancestry belonged to the Samuel Tichner society, and is buried in their site
at Mt. Carmel cemetary. I see the American Jewish Historical Society has a
1926 booklet >from the Landsmanschaft dinner which lists 75 officers and
members. I hope to get a look at it when I have time to get over there, which
may not be for several weeks. If there are names you wish me to look for
please email me privately.

Finally, Grandpa Fred Gelberg, born 1899, Eldridge Street, Lower East Side of
NYC, was a member of the Whittier Club. A social/athletic club of young
Jewish men that, I think, may have been tied in with the Y but I am not sure.
I have a picture of a group of them; there are no names other than my gf that
I can identify. write me if you wish to explore this information.
