My great-grandparents are buried there - are you aware that there is an Old
Mount Carmel Cemetery? I called the cemetery for the information I needed and
they faxed it to me free of charge. This saved me a trip of going there. They
were very nice and had no problem doing this.
Included were date of death, burial date, place of death, grave location -

Adding on to the response you already received (re: Glogau), I would actually
suspect that this is a reference to the town of Gross Glogau, where the English
record keeper converted "Gross" to "Great" and then abbreviated to "Gt". I
believe this town is in Silesia (near Breslau, Germany; now Wroclaw, Poland).

I hope you can solve your mystery.

More on Salt Mines #general

MS ANN RABINOWITZ <PQUA32A@...>

The area of Drohobych and Borislav, Ukraine, was well-known for both
its salt mines as well as its petroleum industry. The salt mines
were a long-standing economic resource in the area and Jews, very
often, in centuries past had the salt concesssion, owned or managed
the salt mines and also worked in the mines. If there was a major
cave-in in one of the mines, there may have been mention of it in the
local papers.

There were Jews that did well economically in Drohobych, but more
often than not, there were Jews who were at the other end of the
economic ladder. There were many restrictions on one's livelihood
and education and many, many taxes which led to impoverishment. This,
in addition, to forced conscription into the Austro-Hungarian
military caused many Jews to leave the area for Vienna first and then
England, America and elsewheres. Fortunately, there was an enormous
drain of population in the late 1800's and early 1900's which saved
many families >from extinction during WWI and WWII.

Many people >from Drohobych and Borislav went to Manchester, England,
and New York. There were several different landsmannschaften in New
York and the Mt. Zion Cemetery in New York had a Chevra Kadisha for
Drohobych/Borislav burials. These are included in Arlene Sach's
cemetery database.

Please check out the following inquiry:

<< Can anyone assist with any information on the ROSEN family. The 1881
Census shows Sarah, Israel and nephew Nathan living in Gloucester.
However by 1895 approx the family were in Hull, where all three are
buried. >>

There is nothing in the original post to indicate to which state or even
country the poster is referring. I believe that England has both a Hull
and a Gloucestor. I am certain that the state of Massachusetts in the
USA has a Hull and Gloucestor as well! People - dont forget - readers
of JewishGen are >from all over the world. Dont assume that we will know
that locations that you know so well. Also, it would be helpful if more
posters would sign their city or residence under their name. Just a few
thoughts...

Before I forward this message to ANYONE I tried to check it out. I cannot
find any Senate or House bill with the number 602P that is currently under
consideration. Senate Bills are numbered S.xxx and House Bills H.R.xxx. And
they don't bear P suffixes.

Perhaps Ms. Turner would give us some additional information before we write
to our Congresspersons and make fools of ourselves. What is the Bill number?
What is it's title? Who is sponsoring it?
