I know there is a town in Westchester County, NY named Bronxville; however
I would like someone to let me know if there is also a section of New York
City called Bronxville. According to his NYC birth certificate for 1908 one
of my uncles was born at 457 Chester St. Bronxville. Since it is a NYC birth
certificate I have to believe that Chester St. is in NYC, but where is
Bronxville. I could not find Chester St. in a yahoo map search. I also
looked up Chester St. in the Morse list of changed street names and it was
not listed.

Dear Allan,

Did you look at the Census for 73 Jefferson Street
and see all the people who lived there?

Sincerely,
Yehudah ben Shlomo

PINS Family From Hoexter Are Sephardim #germany

Dear Ger Siggers,
I attended a memorial ceremony for the Jerusalem
artist and collector Jacob Otto PINS (1917-2005).He
was born in Hoexter to Leo and Ida PINS. Only 45 Jews
lived there until 1939. There are testimony pages for
them at Yad Vaswhem. I learned >from his brother that
the family lived in Germany since the 16th century.
The origin of the name is PINTO. They were >from Spain.

MODERATOR NOTE: Attention Roger Lustig - PINS sounds
like a candidate for your database.

SCHUSTER - Augsburg #germany

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

My distant cousin Henry BERGMANN (1831-1866), about
whom I have written in "Stammbaum", married Charlotte
Jenny SCHUSTER in Frankfurt-am-Main in 1860. In a
family paper she is described as being >from an
aristocratic Jewish family. I assumed that Miss
SCHUSTER was born in that town or nearby, but, now, I
have some information, which leads me to feel that she
may have come >from Augsburg, where there was a wealthy
SCHUSTER family.

Does anyone have any information on SCHUSTER families
in Augsburg?

Adam Yamey, London, UK<adamandlopa@...>

MOD NOTE: Mr. Yamey's history of German Jewish families in
19th Century South Africa will appear in "Stammbaum N. 28"
to be published shortly. More information about "Stammbaum"
is available at the GerSIG website.

Re: Bad Salzungen Jewish Community & Roeschen SCHMIDT nee EISEMANN #germany

I made an error in my post yesterday. I stated:
"I add that there is an entry in the FTJP showing EISEMANNs in Bad Salzungen
who earlier lived in Bauerbach, Baden. If this is indeed where the Bad
Salzungen EISEMANNs came from, then it is less likely to be my family."

I have been informed that this Bauerbach is the one that is in Thueringen
(Thuringia). I did not know previously that this town existed.
It is between Meiningen in Thueringen and Mellrichstadt in Bayern. Thus,
it is still quite possible that it is the same family.

Hi.

If you know the name of a business or corporation, you can look up the
corporate information via
http://www.corporations.state.pa.us/corp/soskb/csearch.asp

The owner's name may be listed--which in my case gave me another name
to research, with positive results!

Unfortunately, there isn't a search by last name of the owner...

Another Search Tip for Everyone (Capital Letter Mix-Ups) #general

Hi.

In the (rare) event this hasn't been mentioned here before; on many
records, including the Census, the letter "F" can be mistaken for a
"T" or "J."

I was able to add another surname, RATNER, to the family tree via
marriage records, and looked it up in the census. I was amazed to
find that in the same house that the RATNER family lived, my
great-great uncle, Lewis FAERSTEIN and his wife, Rose (nee RATNER)
also lived. Because of the penmanship, the Census index had the "F"
as a "T" making the name "TAERSTEIN!" It even could have been
mistaken for a "J."

Had I not found this other connection (RATNER), I probably wouldn't
have found FAERSTEIN in the 1920 Census.

How to interest relatives... #general

Michelle Fanwick

Good Morning,
Last year in my Rosh Hashanah letter/Card I sent every relative (about 200
plus) a family tree and told them how we were related. I enclosed contact
info for my self and asked them to let me know if I omitted any information
or there were any errors. I was very lucky and I received a lot of
responses. I try to contact everyone twice a year, I send a picture of my
family and then they know who we are and I think that makes them more likely
to respond to my inquiries. I also email pictures to new finds and I always
tell them how we are connected, before I ask for information. I also thank
them for the information that I'm looking forward to receiving.

Good luck and Happy New Year,

OXENHORN/GERMAN #general

AllanDolgow@...

My grandmother, Chaike( Ida) GERMAN (or HERMAN), was born in NV in about
1877. My grandfather, Meyer Isaac OXENHORN or (OXENGORN), was born in
Ostrog, Ukraine in about 1869. He had a first wife whose last name we
don't know and a son by that marriage. The first wife died and my
grandparents were married by 1897 possibly in Kamenny Brod. Oral history
is grandmother refused to raise the child, and we do not know what became of him.

When my grandfather immigrated to the U.S. in 1904 >from Kamenny Brod, the

COOPERSMITH (manifest spelling) who lived on 73 Jefferson Street in New York

Yiddish word "Ah-noos" #general

Lenn Zonder <lenwriter@...>

Subject: Translation of Yiddish word "ah-noos"
From: <lenwriter@...

<hekenvin@...> asked if anyone knew what
"ah-noos" meant. Like Stan Goodman, I don't know
either. However, I would venture an educated guess
that it is flaxseed oil.
The 2000 edition of the Cambridge World History of
Food records the use of flaxseed oil for cooking in
Russia in the 19th Century and the use of seeds for
making tea.
Actually, flaxseed oil was known to the Romans and
Greeks before the common era, and even earlier, by the
Egyptian Pharaohs.
