I agree with Peter Spiro that this is an excellent book (in Hungarian). I
haven't seen the film.
My mother was in Concentration camps. While I was a child, she neither
dwelled on her experiences, nor tried to hide them >from me . She was matter
of fact about them -just like the book. These things happened. She came back
from Germany to the total devastation of her former life.
What could she do?

She had to get on with her life. No-one was particularly sorry for her or
too concerned. The Hungarian non-Jews wished she didn't come back. Everyone
had their own problems. Some people had more family members murdered than
she had...so what should she complain about?

In today's world where the loss of one life can be front page news, the
concept of the Shoah is unimaginable. The book wrote it down how it was,
without invoking the US cavalry, an Italian comic or Hogan's heroes. That is
what makes the book so chillingly real and why it resonates with me.

Hamburg and Breslau: JULIUSBERG : Help needed by researcher with newly discoverd Jewish German Polish ancestry #germany

holbrook <holbrook@...>

I would be very grateful for help to assist me research the following
ancestor whose Jewish identity I have only recently discovered. I intend to
go to Germany and Poland this summer to do further research and would be
grateful for any guidance:

Franz JULIUSBERG: born 22 Feb 1865 Breslau died 8 Feb 1936 (?Hamburg) . As
yet I cannot identify his parents and cannot confirm that he came from
Breslau. He married Johanna NATHUSIUS. I do know that he was connected with
the Hamburg firm of Hepner and Juliusberg, and importer and exporter of
tannic acid, that was 'aryanized' by the Nazis. I would like to know:

a) where can I go to find out about the JULIUSBERG family in Hamburg and
more information about the company of Hepner and Juliusberg?

b) where should I go to investigate the JULIUSBERG family in
Breslau/Wroclav?

c) where would there be any records created by the Nazis, in particular, the
Reichssippenamt, about the JULIUSBERG family?

Many thanks for any help offered.

Dear List,

I have spent the past 13 years since my Father died looking for the families
of his brother and sister who he had not spoken to for some 30 years. About
a month ago I found the death details for my uncle who had only died 3 years
ago and was not living were I last knew he had been. I immediately sent for
his certificate hoping to find the address of his daughter. When it came
the informant was actually the son of my aunt. The address was his current
home so I phoned him. We had a long conversation during which he informed me
that he had a large number of items belonging to his mother which were part
of our family history and that he would let me have them.

On Friday I received a large envelope with some photos and documents in. It
was a treasure trove and included my grandfather's army discharge papers
from 1912, a testimonial for him >from the Lt. Colonel, various postcards he
had written during WW1 during his 2nd period of army service also included
photos of my great grandparents and other family members.

I have written this to encourage people not to give up even when brick walls
apparently have been hit!

Bavaria is a b-i-g place #germany

The reference to parts of Bavaria being in today's
Baden-Wuerttemberg may derive >from "Schwaben." this
is a linguistically coherent region, Swabia, partly in
Bavaria, partly in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Swabia has a cultural coherence but is not much
more precise as a geographical term than our American "Midwest."

Worse yet, natives of Wuerttemberg often refr to
themselves as Schwaben, implying that all of DSchew.
is in Wuerttemberg.

There also is the "Ries" mostly in Bavaria, adjacent to
B-Wuertt, with families named Rieser or, to name a
famous descendant, Michael Reese whose eponymous
hospital is in Chicago, although he died in San
Frnacisco where there is the Michael Reese

Yes, there is:

All who died during the Sjoa are displayed here, It is a mega project.
English version is complete.

or would someone know a person who specializes
in Dutch Holocaust research who could help me? One of my father's
cousins was a cantor in the Hague. He did not survive. His son did
and ran an international company about an hour >from Amsterdam. My
father saw him last in the 1950s. I tried to reach him in the early
1980s, without success.
Why don't you just ask here, and we will try to help you.

I've had success with various Polish resources, but little with Dutch.
The Dutch consulate has a war department, but was not helpful. One
of their other departments tried to do research, but couldn't find
anything about the business or the Hague.
Again try your best or ask here.

Several other people
recommended the website for the Center for Dutch Jewry in Israel, but
I've again run afoul of the Dutch language.
<http://dutchjewry.huji.ac.il/> I often use, this page looks English to me!

I tried to e-mail them
many months ago, but never received a response.

I've tried to e-mail the Jewish Museum in Amsterdam.
I do not think they are the right source.

The material on
their website is mostly in Dutch, and they don't seem to be responding
to e-mails, or else, I assume that their English is limited.
You assume wrong, limited English is improbable(!) in general overhere, but
they are probably hard working volunteers, perhaps having other priorities.

Please give names and information about your quest on this NG, and many
will at least send you in the right direction, even possibly someone will
have something in their personal family triee archives.

I would have thought a chazan in the Hague would have been
particularly easy to track.
Why a chazan? You just write to president of the local Jewish community if
the general resources fail, but first try those, including this NG.

I also heard several years ago that the Dutch helped reconnect Jewish
families torn apart by the war through a TV program. I'm not certain
whether this is still active.
The nearly perfect public administration of the Netherlands, a G'd's-sent
for the German occupation during Sjoa, has left not many "great questions"
of separations overhere. In Eastern Europe this is different.

The said TV-program is mostly aiding present day non-Jewish research of a
very personal/emotional kind, like third world adoptions of the 1950-1980
era. They are not for general questions. Only interested making nice TV
with some soap like content.

By the way, I was also looking for some archival material from
Majdanek. I've e-mailed them several times and didn't receive a
response. I didn't know whether anyone knew of a contact at the
concentration camp's museum or Library who could use English.
I don't know about that, but why do you expect others to use your native
language? You, as the asking party, could try local [to you] help to
contact those in their own language.

For the Netherlands, English is not a problem!
