I am sure that many people are shocked to read about the Austrian election
results, and the high vote for Haider. Now, what is my explanation:

Our Sozialdemokraten are not a labor party any more! Only 50% of the workers
voted for them, the other 50% for Haider. Many people think "that something
must be changed" and Haider promises it. He is probably not a a right-wing
extremist but a right-wing populist. Taxes are too high in Austria, the
retired people fear to get less money. Haider promises everything. Even 30%
of traders voted for him! Trading is very difficult by too many rules and
laws. Many people are sure that there is not really a difference in which
party they vote for. Now they will give Haider a chance, as they think the
Coalition (co-operation) of the present governmental parties benefits not he
people but the politicians only.

I think that the "problem of foreign laborers" is not similar to the
xenophobia of former times. It is a problem of competition, and the
government was too weak in importing laborers in the early 1990's and before
that time. They've changed this politic only now, when Haider got strong by
it. Maybe it was easier to get Austrian naturalization than a Green Card in
the US! It seems the rate was getting too high all the past years. In
addition, many people fear the Eastern countries. Many companies closed
their factories in Austria and opened them in the Eastern neighbour
countries, as they have 10% of the salaries only.

We will see what government we will get now. I am not sure that Haider will
get an order for creation of a government by our President. However, he is a
big rival now.

Dear Fellow Galitzianers:

I have been trying in vain to find the ship that my maternal GF Louis BAREL
arrived on so that we can trace the manifest to his home in Austria. We have
found his NY address in the 1920 Census, two filings of Intention (because he
missed the time requirement), a local address in Monmouth Co., NJ and a local
address in Lakewood, NJ where he died.

Does anyone out there in cyber space have any knowledge of him or most
specifically where he came >from and what ship he arrived on. His two notices
of Intention gave two different dates of arrival in NY 10/1890 & 1891.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

May I criticise? This sort of unthinking, prejudiced assumption that History
repeats itself exactly discredits our research and breeds a bizarre attitude
among us, the children of survivors - a kind of shared smug self-identity as
permanent victims. It is no longer us Jews who are the victims nor is a
Hitler the threat to us. If we really care, we should be the people who help
Bosnian or Kosovar Muslims. Or the East Timorese.

Dennis, surely Andreas is explaining to us that Halder is a nasty but
shrewd populist, not a Hitler. I think the USA has had its fair share of
populists, no?

Donna Odland <larose@...>

My situation is different, and I've been puzzling over this: ggrandparents
from Russia (Lithuania) emmigrated to US, had two sons, the oldest was
Solem, the second was Samuel Max. Are these actually the same names? Does
Samuel derive >from Solem? In later life, Solem called himself Sam, and
Samuel went by Max. Any ideas?

-----Original Message-----
From: Sherri Goldberg <gracieclover@home.com>
In all likelihood, one of those boys died in early childhood and his
brother was named after him in his memory. This has happened in my
family. My great-uncle's eldest children were killed and when he
remarried and had children with his 2nd wife, they named their children
in the memory of my uncle's dead children.

Dear Denise,
We could give you a better answer if you told us where YOU are,
or where you need the records to be..

My recommendation is to order the microfilms through your nearby
Mormon Family History Center. However , that'll be useless to
you if you live somewhere where the Mormons don't have libraries.

I could also suggest you go to the New York Public Library. But
that's also useless to you if you're not in New York.

We may be knowledgeable, but we're not psychic.
