Obtaining BMD records from Tarnopol ?? #general

Stephen Shamroth <shamroth@...>

Dear Genners,

While going through the JewishGen archives I came across a December 1997
posting >from < jhackin@hotmail.com >
who mentioned that he had obtained photocopies of birth records from
Tarnopol, Galicia. I tried to contact him but to no avail, so is there
anybody else out there who has been successful in getting such records? If
so, exactly how did you do it? Also, are there other records besides those
of births?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Searching for: WEISSTEIN in Tarnopol

Hoch Deutsch

It has always been my understanding, as someone who grew up in Europe as the
child of German born parents that Hoch Deutsch is the true German as spoken
by most Germans, as opposed to the Schwabisch dialect >from the South, or
Schweizer Deutsch of the Swiss or the Austrian dialects etc. It is not
entirely unlike the expression "The Queen's English" when referring to those
who speak the language without accent or dialect in the U.K.

GUREVICH/HOROWITZ/SOLOW/SOLOVEICHIK #belarus

Mpcamitta@...

Dear genners:

I have just begun to explore the origins of my great-grandmother Sheine
BASSEIN'S GUREVICH family. I believe they come >from the area around
Minsk, but I do not know >from which shtetlach they hail, or how far flung
they are.

Sheine was a wigmaker in Minsk, and helped my great-grandfather, a cantor,
run his bakery. They lived in the Bronx in the United States, for many
years on Stebbins Avenue. Sheine had a brother who lived in San Antonio,
who may have used HOROWITZ, and who wrote on religious subjects.

Her father was named Yacov-Meir.

Her granddaughter (my first cousin once removed) said that she had many
GUREVICH/HOROWITZ cousins in the United States.

I understand that there is a rather large GUREVICH/HOROWITZ family that
can be traced to Prague in the sixteenth century. Does anyone know if
all GUREVICH/HOROWITZ people are related to this family?

My great grandmother was also a SOLOW.

One member of the family is supposed to have gone to Butte, Montana, and founded the Sobo glue company. Another who lived in New York was named Ahre-Itche.

Does any of this ring bells with anyone out there?

I suppose that SOLOW might have been SOLOVEICHIK, although I can't be
sure of this. I am under the impression that there is a SOLOVEICHIK
rabbinic dynasty. Are all SOLOVEICHIK'S related to this line?

I've searched JGFF, and the Family Tree sites, and have queried people
privately with GUREVICH/HOROWITZ/SOLOW/SOLOVEICHIK research interests,
but have not gotten too far.

Can any kind genner out there help out?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Pa-chutch #general

This probably is just a coincidence in same sounding words.
A Pa-chutch is just a very common yiddish name for a pest.

My mother-in-law used to refer to people she wanted to criticize as
being >from Pa-chutch. I never thought it was a real place until I read
Martin Rudner's article on " Buczacz." He writes that his grandmother
called it " Bitchutch" in Yiddish.

You will find it in the Ukraine at 49 05/ 25 24.

Hope this helps.

Brooklyn Naturalization Index #general

Jgsny@...

The JGS (NY) has begun an effort to create an online searchable database of
the index to Brooklyn Naturalizations (1907 - 1924) located in the Kings
County Clerk's Office. Phase I of this ongoing project, although still under
construction and growing, is complete and may be accessed and searched. The
database is accessible through the JGS (NY) homepage located at
http://www.jgsny.org

So far, over 65,000 names are in this database. Please keep in mind that
with the announcement of any new site there is typically an initial flood of
users that may possible tie up the system.

Enjoy!

Old cemeteris in Israel #general

Yoav Epelman,TLV R&D <yoave@...>

Hi
Most of this question is to the Israeli's in the group.
I want to search all the cemeteries in Israel for the surnames I'm looking
for. Obviously I don't have to look in Sderot's cemetery for family that
came here in 1880 ...
Can someone direct me to a minimized list of some major cemeteries to
search? (like Har Hazeitim...).
I might have family branch that came here in the late 1800's ("Alyia
Rishona & Shnia") and I am very interested to find them.
Thank you in advance.
