My Grandmother, Weinberg, came >from Piatra, Romania in 1886. Unfortunately,
there appears to be no less than 10 cities in Romania called Piatra. How can
I narrow this down?

Thanks,

PERLMUTTER/GRABASRKY of Rozyzche and Ratne Ukraine #general

RBWANN@...

I just returned >from a week in Western Ukraine. We based out of Luts'k, but
our families are really >from Rozychze (15 kilometers north and east of
Luts'k) and Ratne which is 100 kilometers north of Luts'k. I am looking for any
survivors with that surname >from either Shtetl. There was some confusion
within our group (18 of us went to the Ukraine) about Jacob Ozer GRABASRKY's
descendants. We know he had three children - Zelda, Reuben and Kalman (circa
1860). We believe there might have been a fourth child. The other "mystery" is
that when my grandfather Abe PERLMUTTER came to the U.S. on the SS Campania
in February of 1907 his sponsor was M. Grabarsky who lived at 195 Houston
Street, New York, New York. We have no idea who that M. Grabarsky could be.
Looking for any information you might have.

Hebrew Translation on a Headstone #general

Steve Heimovitz <heim@...>

I tried to post a small 100kb .jpg of Hebrew writing on my great
grandmother's headstone. Did not know the newsgroup permitted this and
received a plethora of information, which I cannot use to convert to a
text file.

Can anyone advise how to get this translated? There are no Rabbi's
available where I live and I do not read Hebrew.

Thanks,
Steve Heimovitz

Translation of Viewmate 8311 and 8312 and jewish roumanian customs #general

Adele Burstein <aburstein@...>

I have found this document among some family papers and am interested in a
translation of the hebrew which is written in to determine the names of the
betrothed and any other personal information. I have posted the first in
two parts on Viewmate as numbers 8311 and 8312.

I am trying to figure out a family puzzle. The signature of Liza Joseph in
English appears to be my grandmother's. The name of this family in the US was
Blumenfeld as far as we knew. However, a Roumanian engagement and marriage
document for her brother also recently found lists him as David Josef and his
mother as Sara Josef. I have never been able to find any immigration details on
either Sara or Liza >from the Ellis Island database under either name.

We have been trying to figure out the relationship of these two names in the
hopes of sending for documents >from Bucharest. Someone suggested that adding the
name Joseph (apparently Sara's father's given name) might be a custom? Seems a
stretch but if anyone knows anything about this it would be most appreciated.

Please contact me privately with translations.
Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Looking for long lost relatives #romania

Sorin Goldenberg <soring0412@...>

Hi All,

I would like to know if by chance (very small) you have some knowledge
about the following people or their descendants.

All those ppl lived in Botosani, Romania (at least part of their life)

1. Hirsch sin Leib and his wife Mintsa.
Hirsch was born in 1856, probably died before 1915, was some kind of trader.
Mintsa was born in 1861, probably died before 1915. I am the
descendant of their son Iancu, latter known as Iancu Goldenberg, born
1886. My family does not know about any other childs, or any other
relatives of Hirsch and Mintsa.
2. Marcu Boingiu (Hebrew name Mordechai). He had a daughter, Golda,
born 1863, died 1942. Anyone knows Boingius or Boiangius >from Botosani
?
3. Azril sin Maier, tailor. Born 1852. Died 1900-1910. The husband of
Golda. Their daughter Malca-Lea was married to Iancu, and we know
about the descendants of their other children - does anyone recognize
Azril ?

Thank you,

Romanian business directory search improvement #romania

Logan J. Kleinwaks

When searching the online 1924/1925 Romania Business and Organizational
Directory, Vol. II, via www.kalter.org/search, results are now organized by
geographic region. For example, a Regular search for Perlmutter returns

"Regular matches to Perlmutter appear in the Romania directory, Vol. II in

Judetul Bacau: 39,

Judetul Cernauti: 886,

ARDEAULUL (TRANSILVANIA, BANAT, CRISANA, MARAMURES)
