Jacques HOROWITZ #yiddish

David W. Harris <dharris1@...>

My ggf, Aaron HOROWITZ, was listed as an actor in the NY state census of
1905. He was the half-brother of the Yiddish Playwright, director and
actor Moses HOROWITZ. Moses (1844-1910), gave his birthplace as
Stanislau, then under Austrian control.

In searching Passenger Manifests for Moses in the 1880's, I came across the
Manifest page for Jacques HOROWITZ, a 30 year old actor >from Austria. He
apparently left Vienna and arrived in New York on the Augusta Victoria,
Sept. 14, 1889, First class cabin and is reported in transit. Jacques
HOROWITZ was a successful actor, appearing in New York in many plays
presented in the German language.

I'm trying to find out if there was any family relationship between Jacques
and Moses (or Aaron). On the gravestones of Aaron and Moses, the father's
name is Shlomo. Does anybody know the background of Jacques HOROWITZ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dear Friends I have received the following communication >from the Archives.
It deals with advance payment for research. Apparently some of the accounts
are not paid and the Archives have to bear the financial loss. I feel that
it is a fair amount for all the work involved and hope that it will be
accepted by all of you.

Please note that the example in the letter is in dollars. However each
applicant will be quoted the amount in their currency
eg Sterling, Deutsche Mark, Canadian Dollars etc
This letter is only a sample and they will send clients letters
with the currency of their country - Sterling for England, Dollars for USA,
Deutsche Mark for Germany etc. It will be about £32GRB , or 75 DM.

Change of Name (converts) #general

Conversion is made by personal, private, chioce. There must not
be any imposition (other than the Halachic rules of conversion).
The name taken is part of the personal choice.

Anything else would be identical to the Nazis naming all Jewish women Sara.

Actually, www.jewhoo.com is NOT connected to Yahoo at all, as you can

I have found it a well-organized and useful page for Jewish resources.

How to include a middle or maiden name on a form that #general

Jonina Duker <jonina.duker@...>

Many forms these days are scanned and items written in are not captured.
When forms are not designed the way we genealogists would like and one
wants to ensure that a middle or maiden name is captured, try including
the middle or maiden name as part of the first name. Usually there are
enough spaces to get it all in. Since there are double first names out
there (ex. Mary Kay) systems are usually designed to accept a space
between two parts of a first name. It's a trade-off -- maybe someone
will think that this name was actually a double first name but on the
other hand at least all the names are recorded for posterity.

Jonina Duker:
BEIDICK (~Minsk), DUKER (~Minsk), GOLDBERG & GORODINSKY (Minsk), KATZ
(Riga?), LEVINE (~Minsk?), RACHMAN (Salakas/Simferopol), RYMER,
SCHMUELIWITZ (~ Minsk?), SIEGEL (Uzpaliai?), STRAUSS (Ekaterinaslav)
ARLICK (Oshminiany), BARNA (Satu Mare), FRIEDLER (Soljataznan),
GOLDSTEIN, LICHTMAN (Csenger/SatuMare), LITZKY (Golshany), RAPAPORT
(Ermihalyfalva/Mihalyfalva), SCHLESINGER
