Dear JewishGenners,

Thanks to my relatives and friend, plus the generosity of members of this
list, I managed to compile my family's first book.
I've started with the second one which shell be more "academic" and less
"private" >from the first one, although the first one achieved a lot of
information; documents etc.
I would like to put in the second book few pictures >from the "shtet'l" and
few cites that were involved in our "story". I'm looking for pictures from
19th century, or >from 20th century of places that "haven't changed".
Mogilev; Shklov; Dobryanka; Poltava; Chernigov; Kiev; Kapitonawka;
Kremenchug; Yekaterinoslaw; Bradiansk; Suraj.

I'll be happy to pay expenses.

Thank you,

Udi Cain (Chaikin), Jerusalem

Hello friends,

On one of the Hamburg passenger lists I found following entry:

ROSENBAUM Isaac, age 20, >from Zell in Bayern
Profession : Labourer (Arbeiter)
Ship's name: Normannia
Destination: New York
Departure date : 17 July 1890
Passenger # : 01.0551
Passage # : A1890.0219
Shipp. company : Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft
Country flag: Germany
Captain's name : Hebich
Ship type: Steamer (Dampfschiff)
Accomodation: Zwischendeck, travelled alone.

I suspect that Isaac is a family member of my ROSENBAUM family >from Zell
near Wurzburg, Lower Franconia, Germany.

Is anyone out there in Jewishgen Land who heard of this Isaac and what
happened to him after he arrived in New York ?

Any leads or links would be greatly appreciated.

Name puzzle: Hane/Hena 2 sisters #general

Barbara Siegel

An appeal to all name mayvens out there.

On records forwarded to me >from the Latvian archives in Riga, there is the
following information re my mgm Hannah FRIEDLANDER LEVINSON.

Listing the children of Moses(Movsha) and Dvora FRIEDLANDER:

1. Daughter Hane. born 11-22-1859 in Windau (sp.in Hebrew script:
het-nun-hey)
2. Daughter Hena. Born 10-18-1861 " " (sp.in Hebrew script:
hey-ayn-nun-ayn)

Daughter #1 "Hane" certainly appears to be my mgm Hannah FRIEDLANDER.
Daughter #2 "Hena" (whom I have never heard of) seems to
be the person(aunt)Hannah's own daughter Anna is named after,
as Anna's ketuba gives her name ashey-ayn-nuhn-aleph (Hena).

I had always assumed that Hannah(?Chana) and Hena were 2 different names.
However, after consulting Boris Feldblyum's book RUSSIAN JEWISH NAMES it
seems that Hane(Gane) and Hena(Gena) are both variants? or alternatives? of
Khano(Chanah).

I am very puzzled by the following:
1.) Isn't it unusual to name 2 girls only 2 years apart names that sound so
much alike?
2.) Why would one name 2 sisters with names that are so
closely related, and have the same root?

I have already discounted the explanation that #1.Hane died and #2.Hena was
named after her and became my mgm Hannah as I don't think she would have
named her own daughter after herself (she lived to have many additional
children after the birth of Anna/Hena).

I hope that this isn't as confusing to everyone else as it is to me. Thanks
for any explanations.

Yama Execution Sitein Minsk #belarus

Franklin J. Swartz <eejhp@...>

Dear All,

We need your help. The sanctity of the Yama Execution site in central
Minsk is being threatened by the intentions of a former Communist Party
functionary.

As many of you know over 4,000 Jews, inmates of the Minsk Ghetto, were
murdered at the site called Yama and their bodies thrown into a pit
there. Often grenades were tossed in to kill the wounded.

On 10 July it is intended to erect on this gravesite a series of
representational sculptures. The estimated cost of the project is
$450,000. The money has not been collected and we are apt to see only
a partially completed work.

The Union of Religious Jewish Congregations of the Republic of Belarus
and other international organisations object to this plan for the
following reasons:

1. It is against Jewish law to build on graves.
2. Representational sculptures offend Jewish laws and the
relatives of many buried there
3. The Chief Rabbi of Belarus, Sender Uritsky, objects to the
construction.
4. There has been no consultation with religious Jewish groups.
5. There has been no competitive bids for the work. All proceeds
go directly to the business of the person erecting the work.
This raises, to say the least, questions of probity.

Many members of the government are sympathetic and wish to stop this
blasphemy. This can be done if we can authenticate the fact that there
are, indeed, bodies at Yama. I have eyewitness records and am, if
necessary, prepared to do archaeological investigations. What we lack,
on short notice, is official documentation of the presence of bodies at
Yama. This evident fact is being denied by the entrepreneur eager to
start the unwanted construction.

If anyone has information I will be grateful.

FEINSTEIN, Abram/Joseph: Philadelphia 1908-1918 #general

Schelly Dardashti <dardasht@...>

Is there by chance anyone now working with Philadelphia directories of
these years?
I am very interested in tracking Abram (listed this way on passenger
manifest) FEINSTEIN living in 1910 at 823 Sears or Bears St. (hard to
read on manifst). His brother-in-law Joseph TALALAI/TALALAY (born 1884
Mogilev, Belarus) arrived in 1910 (age 26), and Joseph's wife Rosa and
daughter Feiga (possibly Rivka or may be a Feiga Rivka or Rivka Feiga)
did not arrive for nearly 7 years after. Joseph changed his name to
FEINSTEIN on naturalization. Joseph was born in Mogilev, but last
residence with Rosa was listed as Ekaterinaslav.

I will attempt to check in SLC at the seminar, but I am just wondering
if someone is by some chance working with these right now and can do a
quick look up.

Or perhaps someone with Philadelphia FEINSTEIN roots will recognize
either Abram-Avraham-Abe or Joseph, Rosa or their daughter (who of
course were known as FEINSTEIN.

Thanks to all.

NADWORNY/FURMAN/BENDERSKY--Argentina #general

Anita Citron <anitac1@...>

My grandfather's brother had 12 children. Two of them went to Argentina. I
only know one definitely. The others are guesses - but I was told that the
one I DO know went with his sister to live in Argentina or went to his
sister already in Argentina (1908). I am assuming the sister was married
(there are 2 that fit the bill).

So, I can write to CEMLA in Buenos Aires to see if there is a listing. But
first I thought to ask the list if anyone had any other ideas. I know about
all the sources in Argentina and the Genealogical society in Argentina. But
I am asking all of you for you experience and best suggestions.

BTW the names of the folks who *could* have been the emigres are:

Rivke Chaimovna NADWORNY FURMAN (Berko Avrumovich) married 1901
Leah Chaimovna NADWORNY BENDERSKY (Srula Avrumovich) maried 1903

Thanks.
