Lodz Area Research Group #Lodz #Poland Searching: PLACHINSKY and MENDELOWITZ from Lodz #lodz #poland

Shelley K. Pollero <rkpollero@...>

Dear Lodz subscribers,

I am researching the PLACHINSKY (PLACZINSKI) and MENDELOWITZ
(MENDELOWICZ) family >from Lodz.

My brother-in-law's grandfather Lazer (Louis) PLACZINSKI was born in
Lodz in the 1880's and married Esther MENDELOWICZ in Lodz. They
immigrated to America c.1912 Their children were Philip (possibly
Fayvel) born c.1912 and Belle born 1915. Belle was my brother-in-law's
mother.

We are in touch with many Plachinsky cousins who live in Israel,
Australia, Canada, and the U.S.A.

One of the Plachinsky cousins with whom we are in contact was
interviewed by Steven Spielberg's team while they were researching for
the film, Schindler's List, because he was a survivor of the camp
depicted in the movie. They needed to verify the facts in the book,
Schindler's List, and he was able to corroborate the details in the
book. He was also videotaped for the Shoah Foundation.

We would love to hear >from other researchers of these families and/or
those who have these surnames in their family tree.

Thank you.

My father died in New Haven, CT in 1986 (presumably a different county, but
maybe the information will be helpful anyway as it's the same
state). Some 10 years later, on a visit, I requested a copy at at some
government office in New Haven (sorry, can't remember which) and they had
it ready for me to pick up a few days later. I don't remember having to
prove I was his daughter (didn't have anything like that with me, anyway).

Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Golubs and Kopester Society #general

Steve Axelrath <saxelrat@...>

We're just determined that my wife's great grandmother and great
great grandmother (both named GOLUB) were buried at the Baron Hirsch
Cemetery on Staten Island, New York. They were interred within the
KOPESTER burial plot.
Does anyone know what KOPESTER refers to? Is it a town? A
province? A family name?

The place Meryl is looking for is the small village "Strzylawki."
It is about 4 km west of Grybow on the road to Nowy Sacz. It is
not unusual for immigrants to refer to the nearby larger town in
conversation as well as records created in their new country.

I'm in a dilemma over the town in which my grandfather was born.
He always said he was >from Grybow (map: 49 38 20 57) but his
niece, who is the only survivor of the Holocaust, now living in Israel,
has told me the town was actually Skrzyzsow (map:49 59 20 57).
The actual birth record lists the town as Strzylawka. The problem
I have is that there is no mention of this town in "Where Once
We Walked", and nothing in Shtetl Seeker. Any and all opinions
will be most welcome!

As far as I know the name in Lithuania/Latvia originally was BLECHER or
BLACHER (changed to BLACKER in the US & Canada.) Maybe someone
shortened it to BLAICH & I will certainly keep your info in my files.

Anyone recall the FTM offer? #general

MBernet@...

Back in mid-may, FTM offered a discount price on its new v. 7.5, and on
updates.

I ordered both an update (for a colleague in Germany who had asked for it)
and a new cpy for myself (I want to upgrade out of my inadequate "other
brand").

The update arrived; the full version wasn't delivered while I was away
"genning" in Europe. I want to contact them with a follow-up. Can someone
please send me the url or e-mail address, better yet the original message
from FTM?
Thanks
