Re: Nationality #galicia

Peter Jassem <jassep@...>

In response to my recent posting on Gesher Galicia SIG I received a letter
from one of our members. I think the issue is important so I decided to
respond in public.

The letter says:
Thanks, any Jew born in Galica should be considered Jewish, not Polish,
Ukrainian, etc. The thought of my grandparents being "considered"
Ukrainian (or any of the others) makes me physically ill. The governments
and most of the people did not consider the Jews to be Polish, Ukranian,
nor, God forbid, German. And neither should we. Regards, H...
Dear H..., your comment is very emotional and I understand this. The
historical fact however is that some Jews, especially in large cities like
Krakow or Lwow and in particular intelligentsia considered themselves
Polish. Those who live in Poland now and are aware of their Jewishness, like
famous intellectual Adam Michnik, consider themselves Polish just as much as
Senator Libermann considers himself American. The same logic applies to
other countries.

And as ill as it may sound to you (and I don't like it either) many Jews
before the Holocaust were proud to be German. I think it is important to
realize this historical truth in order to understand the true dimension of
the Holocaust tragedy and betrayal.

Passenger list with no ship name #general

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

We just received a copy of the alien registration for
Nachman/Nathan Pickholtz of New York City. (I was surprised to
see it was dated November 1940 - I thought this was always a
January event.)

On that registration, he states that he entered the US in October
1894 but didn't recall the name of the ship.

Will NARA accept an application for a passenger when given
several ships to choose from? And how can I narrow down the
choice of ships when all I have is a month of arrival. I'm going to
assume he came into NY. He was coming >from East Galicia.

Nathan never became a citizen, so I'm not sure he filed even first
papers. We are fortunate to have the November 1940 registration.
He died 13 December 1940.

Oya li! Woe is me! #general

David Ziants <dziants@...>

At the end of this posting, is a translation of part of a kina (elegy)
which was composed by Menachem ben Rabbi Machir (11th cent) in the
aftermath of the destruction of whole communities, perpetrated by
the Crusaders which started May 1096 CE (called g'zerat tatnu -
tatnu referring to the Hebrew year 4856).

The elegy alludes to the destruction of the First Temple (586 BCE)
an early and prime catastrophe for the Jewish People on the 9th Av,
and the scenes as described of then, together with the scenes of
his time which ravaged at this time of year. Also occurred on this
day was the destruction of the Second Temple (in 70 CE), the fall
of Betar at the end of the Bar-Kochba revolt (135 CE), and many
other disasters to the Jewish People.

We also have the scenes of our own times, of the mass destruction
of Europe. A monument and marker which lies in my ancestral
town of Narewka, near Bialystok, states in Polish that this is
the mass grave of 500 Jews murdered by the Nazis (y"s) on the 5th
August 1941. This is the 12th Menachem-Av 5701 in the Hebrew calendar.
The men were shot at the edge of the forest, so they shouldn't join
the partisans, while the women were locked up in a barn to be
deported to Treblinka, as were other communities in that area.
It is assumed that some of my grandparents' cousins, together with
uncles and aunts, are among these people.

Kinot were read last Thursday morning, the fast of Tisha B'Av (9th Av),
in synagogues in both Israel and around the world. It was my intention
that this posting would appear on that day for most of the Jewishgen
readership, as Jewish tradition does not encourage the focussing on
kinot after the date. This was held up, because of a technicality
which I have hopefully corrected, and the posting is now being resent
on the 12th Menachem-Av which, assuming the accuracy of the
monument, is the yahrtzeit (anniversary of death) of my ancestors'
landsmen and possibly family. May this posting be dedicated to
their memory.

Tisha B'Av has yet to turn into a day of joy. The State Of Israel,
although a (big) step in the right direction, has not yet solved
all our problems.

The non-literal translation of a poetic Hebrew, is taken from
the Avraham Rosenfeld Kinot (no.35) (second edition; Copyright (C)
Abraham Rosenfeld, 1970; Printed in Israel - 5730-1970 - by S. Monson,
Jerusalem).

from Kina 35:
I raise lamentations, I drag out my grief - Oya li! Woe is me!

Bitterly do I weep, for the fury of the
adversary led me off my ways - Oya li! Woe is me!

He (G-d) has made long my exile and made my heart faint (with
despair) - Oya li! Woe is me!

The hunter led me (into captivity), he trod (mercilessly)
upon me, crushed me, and secured his prey - Oya li! Woe is me!

Is it but a trifling thing that my enemies have profaned my
Sanctuaries - Oya li! Woe is me!

They disregard my holy places, starting with my consecrated (priests),
and held my holy one in cheap contempt - Oya li! Woe is me!

In the year 4856 (tatnu), in the eleventh year of the 256th (ranu)
cycle (of the New Moon) - Oya li! Woe is me!

Hordes, numerous as locusts took up arms and stripped bare
the place (where Israel and G-d dwelt) - Oya li! Woe is me!

They sought to mislead me, and they made heavy my yoke -
Oya li! Woe is me!

They thwarted their beliefs and compared signs, and perverted me
- Oya li! Woe is me!

They rejected ransom, but they oppressed our souls -
Oya li! Woe is me!

They trampled on my Levites, they stamped upon my Priests
(into the mire), they violated my virtuous women - Oya li! Woe is me!

Those who died by the sword were torn limb >from limb in their
innocence - Oya li! Woe is me!

The corpses of the perfect ones, who were without blemish were
left lying deserted (without interment) - Oya li! Woe is me!

Naked they were dragged about and cast (headlong) to be fouled
in the dirt - Oya li! Woe is me!

-- this continues describing the slaying of our people
and contrasting this to the times of our glory when the
Bet HaMikdash (Temple) stood, and then concludes with a
few sentences of hope - DZ --

But when he (G-d) saw the annihilation of the Hebrew people, he
had compassion upon them, so as not to destroy them; indeed there
is hope for the future! O thou, who dwellest in heaven, exalt thy
right hand to return and have compassion (upon Zion), for whom no
one cares. Awake, and rise to reconstruct it, and let the
Divine Presence be re-established in its (exalted) place.
May next years Tisha B'Av be a day of rejoicing!

Dallas and Montreal help - done #general

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

Last Sunday I asked for help with a phone call in Montreal and in
finding Ginta Weiser of Dallas.

I received several offers of help, starting with Stanley Diamond of
Montreal. He traced the person at my starting point and located the
Toronto daughter of the missing Montreal Pickholz and we have
now begun investigating this new branch.

The Toronto woman tells be that her cousin (now deceased) was
in fact Gina Wizer (close) of New Orleans (not so close), so the
Dallas question is now closed as well.

Thank you to Stanley and everyone else who offered. This was a
tiny clue only a week ago and has since become an entire branch.
So be persistent even in the "minor" directions.

Has anyone out there heard of the Hermann Benevolent Society, based in NY?
My father-in-law was a member of this group. I have a photo, dated,
Mar. 16, 1976 commemorating the 1500th HBS meeting. Shown are William
FLAMHOLTZ, Sam KOPP, Syd GREENSPAN, Nat VOGEL, Leo FLOSS, Dave LERNER,
Ken and Alan ALTERMAN, Jonas KATZ, Sol MANNHEIMER and one individual who
is not known. The memorial secretary, in the 1970s was Nat TALLON.

My question is this: was this a landsmanshaften group and, if so, what
shtetl did they represent? Any help in this matter would be appreciated.
