Horse-Drawn Cabs #southafrica

Does anyone have any information on the horse-drawn cabs that operated in
Johannesburg and East Loindon South Africa around 1900-1905? I recetly found
a licence for a cab operator issued in East London in 1902.

I am searching for further information on Abraham Goldstein who farmed on a
small farm called Welbedacht in the Oudshoorn district between 1895 and
1913. He had some ostriches as well as a shop on the farm. I am trying to
establish if he went to Johannesburg after 1913.

There are 8 SCHWEID entries in Bedamayich Chayi, the Yizkor Book for
Ujvaros, Hungary (now Orasu Nou, Rom.) and surrounding communities
including Sarkozujlak (now Livada Noua, Rom.). I've gone through all
of them and don't see any mention of Rosza. What was your
grandfather's name? Because this book is based on circumcision
records, there are few women mentioned.

My maternal grandmother, Lottie BERKOVITS, was born in Ujvaros in
1878. Her youngest sister, Szerena (Sussa Malka), who is mentioned in
the book, married Moshe (Miksa, Max) ROTH who was born in 1893 in
Sarkozujlak. I do not know anything about his family but their son
Ernest (Pityu) ROTH, who was born in Ujvaros in 1917 and now lives in
Florida, may be able to give you some information.

According to the book, ROTH was a very common name in this area. In
fact, two of my grandmother's sisters married men named ROTH. In
addition to my great aunt Szerena's husband Moshe, mentioned above,
there was also an Elimelech (Max) ROTH, who married my grandmother's
oldest sister, Chana Shondel BERKOVITS. I don't know where he was
born.

Please get in touch with me if you would like a phone number and
address for Ernie ROTH in Florida.

I am searching for my grandfather's sister's family. Her name was Rose
Schwede and she married Eugene Roth in NYC. Their son, Irving Roth, would
be in his 70's now probably. Where is he? The Roths had a daughter named
Ethel but her name would have been changed if she married.

I tried every Irving Roth in NYC and left messages. Rose was >from a small
town near Szatmar (Sarkos Ujlak). Any help would be appreciated.

question about mailings #hungary

Gabor Hirsch <hirsch@...>

A humble question, is it necessary to send half a dozen email inside a
period of few hours (5 mails >from Sa. 01:34 to Sa. 02:26) , with very
short messages. May be the message is one or two lines the in each mail
repeated information about SIG / H-SIG is about 8 lines. We are
complaining because of slow transmitions on the data-highway and at the
same time we are slowing it down with unnecessary repetitions. If you
want to answer different mails in one mail only, you can indicate it in
the subject line with x-different infos. I would like your comment.
Best regards
Gabor Hirsch

mod.-I agree with Gabor. I am also requesting that each respondant to a
posting take a few seconds and edit the orginial message prior to sending
back a response. Don't forget to eliminate the "signature" lines at the
bottom of each message since they will be repeated in the response. People
don't generally see the duplication of the unedited responses since I try to eliminate these extraneous items. However, it is a time consuming task to do so many. LS

Identifying a "Jewish" costume #hungary

David Mandel <dcmandel@...>

I have uploaded a photograph of my grandmother, Lena Ehrenreich Mandel, to the
ViewMate site. The photo was taken around 1895 in New York or Scranton, PA.
My grandmother is wearing a very unusual dress. It is decorated with images of
playing cards, an image of a hand holding five playing cards, and it has coins
sewn onto it. My grandmother's hair is waist-length and has been pulled over
her right shoulder. It's a very strange photograph. I would enjoy hearing
from anyone who might know the origin of such a dress and the circumstances in
which it may have been worn.

When are JRI-Pl -PSAcontributors eligible to the entire file of indexes for their town ? #poland

Nicole Berline <nberline@...>

from several messages like the one below, I understand that ,
for some towns, the JRI-Pl -PSA contributors are eligible
to the entire Excel file of indexes for their town .
Why is this policy not followed with all towns ?
As Hadassah Lipsius explained in her message about Cesztochowa,
being able to search through the whole file, using various key words,
is much more efficient that just searching by name .
( Hadassah explained that she had the opportunity of searching
through the whole Cesztochowa file
as she was doing the quality control for it)

Subject: Piatek Vital Records - Great News
It is estimated that the costs of adding the Piatek records to the JRI-Poland
database will be $709.
Researchers contributing a minimum of $50 will be eligible to receive a copy of
the Excel
spreadsheets that include the entire index of Piatek birth, marriage, and death
records.

about this, although I can't yet tell wether any of them belongs to my

But apparently one of the index is false:
The cover letter writes that
"the record 294 in the book of deaths of non christians [...], year 1892
is not the death record of Chaim ROCHMAN " .
( I checked again in JRI-Pl data base, the index is there all right).

Probably there was a misprint in the indexing. Has this happened before ?
Can anything be done about it ?
( PSA did not mention returning the 10$ for that false index ...)

Nicole BERLINE, Paris
Nicole:

The indexing of Warsaw City Jewish vital records (not filmed
by the Mormons) is being handled by dedicated personel of
the Ronald Lauder Foundation Genealogy project at the Jewish
Historical Institute in Warsaw and the resulting indices are
posted to the JRI-Poland database.

Unfortunately, many of the registers among the first group to be
indexed were poorly labelled and it took some detective work
to properly identify them. Nonetheless, it seems an error has
found its way into the indices. We will bring this matter to the
attention of our friends in Warsaw and will let you know what
we find.

Now that the fumigation and preservation work that was being
carried out on many of the registers (at the Warsaw archives)
during the past year has been completed, indexing of additional
volumes has just gotten underway. We hope to have news about
the next group of indices to be available to JRI-Poland in the
not too distant future. No need to ask...we won't delay getting
them posted to our database!

RINGGOLD and Land & Deed Records #poland

The Kendrick's <kendrickkreation@...>

Hi!

It's taken almost a year, but I do believe we have the confirmed surname of our
RING family prior to immigration to the United States. The RING's of America most
likely were the RINGGOLD's of Austria.

Thursday, I was contacted by a link to the family who said, "the original surname
was RINGGOLD." Through numerous searches today I have located a John RINGGOLD who
lived at 13 Kirkpatrick St., Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA. This document
shows him living at this address in 1890 - 1891. Although this may be a
coincidence, letters >from my grandmother to my grandfather in my possession show
grandpa living at 128 Kirkpatrick St., Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA >from c.
1912-1917. Relatives say at one time, a member or members of the RING/RINGGOLD
family owned an entire block in Pittsburgh.

To me it this is all worth investigating with thoroughness.
How might I locate land & deed records for the property at 13 and 128 Kirkpatrick
St. for the years 1890 - 1891 and 1912 to learn who the owners were. If anyone
knows the correct address
to write for this information, or if anyone might have access to
these records, please contact me privately. Your help might just break-through a
25 year old brick wall.

Also, if anyone has access to Pittsburgh city directories for the above years I
would be most appreciative of a lookup.
Thank you for your time and any assistance.
