Seeking "Jews of Poznan" catalog #germany

Ruth and Bruce Lynn <lynn33@...>

Hello,
Have any of you been able to purchase a copy of the exhibition catalog:
"Between Tradition and Modernity: The Jews of Poznan in the 19th and 20th
Centuries" by Tamara Sztyma-Knasiecka? Edward Luft wrote about it in the
Spring 2007 issue of Avotaynu, on p. 71.

I tried both e-mail addresses he listed, asking whether it's still
available, and whether a US check for $11.00 would be acceptable. One
address bounced and there was no reply >from the other.

Or do any of you know of a library in the Boston area that has purchased
this book? Brandeis does not seem to own it. Thanks very much.

Dear Genners,
I looked at the new site for Jewish cemeteries in Hessen and I must say that
its creators have done great work. It's easy to search and the results are
excellent. Also the presentation is on a high level.
As one who is working on a parallel project in Holland I said to the creator and
all the workers Kol Hakavod you do a wonderful work.

A GerSIG reader drew my attention to a spelling mistake in my message ID 798432.
I therefore repeat my searching message:

Im am looking for descendants of Baruch Moses WOLF and - of the same family
- Martin WOLF. They are said to have had a business called "Gebruder WOLF,
Jmmendingen", some time during 20th century.

Seeking Family of Martha SINGER, Riverdale, NY #general

Vivian Kahn

I'm searching for family of Martha SINGER who was living on Johnson
Avenue in Riverdale, Bronx, NY in 1992 when she submitted a POT for
her mother Rose KLEIN b. Ungvar, Hungary, 1885. Rose's father
Leopold ROTMAN married my great aunt following the death of her
husband Ignacz ROSENBERG and his wife Netty Rotman.

I found a NY Times death notice for a Holocaust survivor named Paul
Singer who was survived by wife Martha. They had sons Larry and Andre.

Please contact me off-list if you have information.

Personal Revelations re METH / LOWENTHAL relationship #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

I replied last night to Patricia Wilson's plea to find the missing father,
Kalman METH >from Vienna, of a child born in Scotland in 1939. Patricia wrote:
"I am writing in anticipation someone may be able to help a dear friend of
mine... to find out what happened to her father in 1939; to be honest I doubt
whether any relevant information can be found but I put to you her story as her
last ray of hope. In 1938 in Vienna Kalman METH married Rosa Cirl LOWENTHAL b
1896 in Wojutycze, Sambor. - Daughter of Akiva (Kiwa)LOWENTHAL and Sosie nee
WOLFINGER."

Rosa departs for Scotland, before Kalman can leave - the baby girl, now aged
68, [mentioned above!] is born in Scotland in 1939. Kalman leaves Vienna for
Poland? in 1939 - or writes that he is "about to leave" on the last train and
is never heard of again. His daughter knows nothing more about her father.

I replied: " The ***key*** to finding out more is in Patricia's sentence
starting "In 1938 in Vienna .." Luckily Kalman and Rosa married in Vienna.
Their wedding certificate should have his address on it. With the address one
can proceed to look for him."

I can now report that there was no such wedding registered at the Israelitische
Kultusgemeinde [IKG], Vienna between Kalma METH and Rosa LOWENTHAL. At this
time, it was very unlikely that they would have married anywhere else. And
furthermore, you can see Rosa in the "Moving Here" catalogue
http://www.movinghere.org.uk/ registered under her maiden name: Rosa LOWENTHAL
born 31 July 1896 in Wojntycze. She is living c/o Altmann, 181 Allison
Street, Glasgow S2 [nurse and housemaid]: http://tinyurl.com/27j7o3

Had she been married, surely she would have been registered under her married
name? She would have had travel papers and a passport in her married name and a
marriage certificate she would have treasured? Thus, I strongly suspect Rosa
and Kalman were not married. Perhaps Rosa hid this fact/the truth >from her
daughter. In that era, illegitimacy was viewed differently >from today.
Sometimes genealogical research has an unwelcome outcome. Nevertheless, I will
try and find out what happened to Kalman, if I can. Did he abandon Rosa and
survive or did her perish like about 70,000 other tragic Viennese Jews?

Arnold Davidson

Slobodka, now known as Viliampole, was about a mile NNW of Kovno. Because of its
proximity, it may now be part of Kovno. It was a well known Jewish center and,
perhaps, its most significant claim to fame was that it was the home of one of the
most prestigious yeshivas in Europe. The original Rosh Yeshiva of the Slobodka
Yeshiva was Rabbi Nosson Tzvi FINKEL (called the Alter of Slobodka). This yeshiva
functioned as a center for advanced training in "mussar", as a sort of finishing
school for successful graduates >from other yeshivas. It was called "the mother of
all yeshivas" because all the roshei yeshivot of the last generation studied
there. Four of the most prominent yeshivas in America were either founded or
developed by graduates of the Slobodka Yeshiva, whose stated aim was to follow the
Slobodka method: Lakewood Yeshiva by R. Aharon KOTLER, Ner Israel in Baltimore by
R. Yaacov RUDERMAN, Chaim Berlin in New York by R. Yitzchock HUTNER, and Chafetz
Chaim in New York by R. Dovid LEIBOWITZ.

My uncle, Norman B. ABRAMS, was a student at the Slobodka Yeshiva. For many years
he was Registrar of the the Talmudical Academy of Yeshiva University and at one
time it was said that he was under consideration for the presidency of Yeshiva
University.

PREIS or PRAIS: Vilna, Vienna, and possibly Argentina #general

Ben Weinstock

Dear group,

I am posting this message on behalf of a friend: she is searching for information
about her grandfather, Dr. Gershon PRAIS (or Gerson/Gergory PREIS), born in
or around Vilna c. 1905; he became a physician and was working in a hospital in
Vienna, Austria before. His wife and daughter fled Vienna and went to Vilna in
1935. They never heard >from him afterwards. It is possible that he survived the
war and wound up in Argentina.

I did a little checking and his name does not appear in Yad Vashem's Pages of
Testimony nor in the Austrian database (DOEW). Of course, he may have died in the
war but he was not documented.

There is an entry for a Gerson PRAIS in Vienna's list of unclaimed assets, which
we will follow up on.

If you are familiar with this name, or can help me to help her, I would greatly
appreciate it.

Please reply privately.
