From: "Pamela Weisberger"
Looking for information on the derivation/meaning of the name:
Meilach or Elimeilach

The name of my father z"l was MEILACH (meaning - king). However, when I
was called up to the Torah, some Gabbais insisted on calling my father
ELIMEILACH (God is my King). It got so bad, that I refused to go up to the
bimah when I was called ZVI ben ELIMELACH.

You will find the name MEILACH in the TeNaCH in First Chronicles, chapter 9, verse 41.

Where to find 19th-c. records for Konigsberg & Memel? #general

Singer, Matt <MSinger@...>

Despite several years of subscribing to Jewishgen listserves, searching the
site, and posting queries, I still don't have a clear idea of where to find
19th-century records >from the Konigsberg/Kaliningrad and Memel/Klaipeda
regions, and which SIG is most pertinent to those researching ancestors
from these areas.
It might be that Jewish records simply don't exist for Konigsberg and
Memel--that they were lost in WWII and all the geopolitical shifting that
followed.

I'd appreciate any help and direction.

I wish to know if there is a newsletter or e-mailing list to which I could
subscribe. I am already registered and receive the JGen digest, but wish to
receive information, anecdotes, recipes etc. pertaining to Jewish culture.
Thank you.

There are many Hungarians named Willie whose Jewish name was completely

Name "Wiillie" #general

Re discussion o of Jewish equivalent of "Willie". It is always dangerous
to make any assumptions regarding Americanization of Yiddish or other
Jewish names. Often, the new nickname is purely arbitrary.
For example, My father's name was Israel (1899-1967, arrived in US in
1941) but all who did not call him Mr. Schiffres (at a time when friends of
20 years' standing still called each other by their last names) called him
"Srulik".
However, when he became part owner of an embroidery factory, "Srulik"
somehow became "Willie" in the ears of American-born employees and that
name stuck as long as he was in that business.

Hi Everyone: Judy Floam was kind enough to offer list members a
xerographic copy of an article about a particular town out of the Jewish
Encyclopedia. I have requested that she send me a copy about Kobrin. When
I receive it, I will type it and send the typed copy to the webmaster.

Mount of Olives & a Jerusalem connection #belarus

judy davis <judy1213@...>

I want to take this opportunity to publically thank
yoni ben-ari <mrtfuzot@netvision.net.il>, He
contacted the General Chevra Kaddisha (burial Society)
in Jerusalem regarding my ggft. Yitzchak Chaim EPSTEIN
son of Eliezer >from the town of Sochivala who was
buried on Har Hazeitim (mount of Olives) in
the hebrew year 5676 (1917-18).

When we were in Jerusalem this December I was able to
arrange with the burial society to see the plot. Their
phone # is:02-5384144. You can call them >from the
states (011-972-2-538-4144) but the contact person is
not always there, so you may be told to call back,
several times.

The fellow who seems to be in charge speaks some
English, but it was helpful having my hebrew speaking
son make the arrangements to meet him and a security
guard at the parking lot just below the western wall.

There was no marker at the grave, due to official
vandelism when Jordan was in control, but thanks to
the computer data base the man >from the Chevra
Kaddisha found the site.

I find it amazing that they have records of 18 million
burials on the Mount of Olives.

There was no charge for help in finding the grave, but
we did make a contribution.

I just got information on other relatives who were
long time residents of Jerusalem.
If you have any ideas about how to find out more about
them and connections please let me know.

Their Israeli last name was MeTar, changed from
Miterstein. They were both opthamologists. They came
to Israel in about 1920 and died about 1980. They
lived on the top floor of a building on Ha Naviem
(street of the Prophets) a little way >from the
Mandelbaum gate. I don't think that they had any
children.

Thanks for any help,

As you saw in yesterday's digest, Judy Floam has volunteered to make
copies of the Belarus related articles in the Jewish Encyclopedia.
Laura Kisber Benjaminson has volunteered to type them into MS Word
documents which our SIG webmaster can easily put on the SIG website. It
sure is great to see how well the discussion group worked and how fast
we have solved how to get the work done. Thanks to the others who
contacted me via private mail to offer assistance or suggestions. OCR
scanning was not suggested by me because the OCR software I tried had
great difficulty recognizing the old type fonts and type sizes used in
the 1904 time period. Some of the italicized print was so small the the
software could not recognize the characters. Sorry I didn't mention
this in by first message.
