Camitta computer crash - lost Bassein emails #general

Mpcamitta@...

Dear jenners,
First, I hope all of you who responded to my viewmate postings received my
notes that I sent before my computer crashed. If not, thank you for
writing - I may have some new connections to follow, and I was able to
connect some Lieberman researchers. It is an added benefit, and I am
pleased to be able to do it.
Now for the bad news - all of your messages were lost when my computer
crashed. If you responded to my Bassein/Bashein,Gurevich/Horowitz., Jacob
Lieberman or Paley viewmate inquiries, I would be so appreciative if you
would you please write to me again? I now will save these messages in hard
copy. I keep all messages even if they don't relate, for future
reference, and, I try to make connections between researchers when I can.
Sincerely,
Miriam Camitta

In answer to Udi Cain; if this name was a diminutive of Shimon it would be
Shim KA rather than Shim KHA. This leads me to believe that it was a mix
up between the Shin and the Sin, the dimuntive ending of ka is not
gutteral. Therefore it seems more likely that it was meant to be Simkha.
Put more precisely, Simha is spelled with a Het, while the Yiddish
diminutive Shimka would undoubtedly be spelled with a Qof (Kof). So if the
person searching the name has a document or gravestone with the original
spelling in Hebrew alphabet, he or she can solve the problem immediately!

Jewish Genealogy Institute web site #general

The Center for Jewish History Genealogy Institute in New York has a new
web site:

http://www.cjh.org/family/index.html

Also the American Jewish Historical Society has redesigned their web site:
http://www.ajhs.org/

Anyone who has linked to the AJHS web site may want to check if the links
still work. The new AJHS site now uses CFM for their URL extensions (what
is CFM?).

I just checked out this map site and found it very easy to use.
I'd like to thank David for posting the site.

Al Wirtzbaum

I just found a really great map site on the internet at
http://www.multimap.com. If you click on the world map picture, and
continue to click away, you can find almost any little village. I found
dozens of small shtetls I have never been able to find on any other
internet mapping system.

Bob Huber was kind enough to provide me the following information and
translation of KUV. Thanks, Bob!

KUV is an abbreviation for the Yiddish "Kranken Unterstitzungs Verein"
which I would translate as "Sick and Benevolent Society".

Re: The town of "Shalat" Austria #general

Alexander Sharon <a.sharon@...>

Pamela,

I believe that town in question is Skalat, currently located in the
western part of Ukraine. Town was indeed part of the Tarnopol region of
the Galicia Crown Territory located within the Austro-Hungarian Empire
till 1918.

If you would like to learn more about the town Jewish history you should
visit Suchostav Region Research Group (SRRG), website hosted by the
JewishGen.

Dear Genners:

I just received the 1919 NYC marriage certificate of my grandparents in
which my grandfather, Samuel Greenhaut, lists his town/country of birth
as: "Shalat, Austria."

Success and failure #general

Stephen G. Esrati <steve@...>

The thread about Lauritz Melchior (which I did not initiate) brought
success. I found a cousin in Israel, one I did not even know existed.
That's the success story.
But then came the failure. He sent me a gedcom file about our family
and I was unable to open it. He said the same thing had also happened
with a new cousin in South America.
He uses Ilanot, a Jewish genealogy program. Apparently he has been
able to post his gedcom on the Family Tree of the Jewish People. But
I am totally stymied. How do I convert an Ilanot gedcom file into a
form recognizable by my Reunion 7 program?
