HaLevi #general

Arthur B. Schwartz, Jr. <abschwartzjr@...>

Dear Genners:

I have just found out my great-grandfather's Hebrew name - Binyamin ben
Avraham HaLevi. I am not versed in Hebrew or the names. Can someone tell
me what "HaLevi" means or what it's significance would be. He had a
different surname, and I am not sure if this is a surname or not. If it
is, then I could surmise that he changed his name?

Respectfully,

Art Schwartz, Jr.

Re: Looking for Town "Keri Helmetz", #general

I suspect that the place you're seeking is Kralovsky Chlmec, Slovak
Republic, formerly Kiralyhelmecz, Hungary. In 1948 this area was part
of Czechoslovia, but it was never in the Czech Republic.

I'm puzzled by the address you mention because Ung Megye is Ung
county. Kiralyhelmecz was in Zemplen megye (county) but very close
to Ung. I don't think that "Vajon Czechoslovakia" is a place. This
phrase translates as "I wonder if this is Czechoslovakia" There was
a place called Bezo in Ung County, Hung. which is now Bezovce, Slov.
but was in Czechoslovakia in 1948. Bezo is west of Uzhorod (Ungvar)
and about 7 km south of Kristy (formerly Kereszt) where my father and
his two brothers were born.

Click on http://www.multimap.com , enter Bezovce, Slovak Republic,
and you'll get a map that shows both Bezovce and Kralovsky Chlmec.

BTW, the FHL has filmed the 1969 census >from this town. You'll find
it on FHL Europe Film # 0722717.

Hello Genners,
I'm attempting to locate my Grandmother's birthplace of Keri Helmetz
(pronounced phonetically for two generations) which was known to be in a
province (I think) called "Bes" or in writing, "Besa". I've also heard it
called "Beche" or "Peche" which sounds like it's phonetic.

We believe it to be in the Czech Republic, though my Grandmother (of
Blessed Memory) was a native Hungarian speaker and always considered
herself to be a Jewish-Hungarian.

In 1948, however, she sent an inquiry to the Red Cross International
Tracing Service to see if her brother and his family survived the
Holocoast, which listed the town last known as: "Ung. Megye, Bes Posta
Vajon, Czechoslovakia." Alas, she never received a response.

Any and all assitance in helping to locate this place would be most
appreciated.

Dembova Buda in Suwalk #belarus

Ava Sweeney asked if anyone had heard of "Dembova Buda in Suwalk"

A search in JewishGen's ShtetlSeeker
http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
for Dembova gives two Dambava in today´s Lithuania.
(would any SIGger know if Buda has a geographical meaning? )

One is about 6 miles E NE of Marijampole - coordinates 5436 2333.
- and according to www.mapquest.com it is very small. Mapquest
shows the place marked with a red star, no name, near a crossroads.
This is the link >from ShtetlSeeker in JewishGen to Mapquest for
this first Dambava:

http://www.jewishgen.org/cgi-bin/mapquest.pl?&lat=546000&lng=235500

The other Dambava is on the road >from Siauliai to Panevezys, about
45 miles N of Kaunas, and further away >from Suwalki (in today's Poland,
near the Lithuanian border and Marijampole).

Ava, maybe since you are researching "Lasdaisky >from ? Suwalk"
you will be tempted to look at a "place in the neighbourhood":
The first Dambava is about 15 miles north of Lazdijai (Lazdiyay,
Lazdyyay) , pronounced by my late father approximately like
"lass-day".

Probably some people coming >from Lazdijai would have taken the name
Lasdaisky.

Hope this helps,

Telephone directories are published for each of Long Island's two

unreadable passenger list #general

Myra S. Davis <myrabokpg@...>

Hello all,
I have a question. (so what else is new?) I finally received my uncle's
passenger list >from NARA and it is a terrible copy. They had even stamped
it with "Best Copy Available" If they had not marked the name in red pen
I would not have been able to see it. This is for the S.S. Oceanic
sailing >from Liverpool to New York arrived Oct. 3, 1906. My question is
can someone tell me the headings on these pages starting with the name of
the passenger and going right so maybe I can figure out what it says.I
can make out a few such as married or single, occupation But where it
says how much money I can't read it or who they were going to see. How is
it possible to get a cleaner copy of this?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Mutilation to avoid Conscription #belarus

Baruch Pinnick <bpinnick@...>

I wouldn't readily dismiss stories about parents mutilating their
children to avoid conscription in the Czar's army. I've served in
the Israeli army and heard of RARE cases in which young conscripts,
usually disturbed, shot themselves in the foot (or similar) to get
out. (I've never heard of Israeli parents mutilating their children,
however!)

The phenomenon probably exists wherever military service is compulsory.
Considering the horror stories I've read about the Czar's army -
conscription for up to 20 or 30 years, antisemitism, you name it - and
comparing it to the rather benign Israeli army, I could well imagine
parents performing this admittedly rather disturbing act for the better
of their children.
