Re: Audrey DEBUSSO (nee BARNETT)
Please could anyone suggest a daily and/or Jewish newspaper I could write to
in Buenos Aires asking for information on my cousin?

Audrey DEBUSSO (nee BARNETT) was born on the 18 February 1930 and I
understand has two children. She lives in Buenos Aires. Her husband may
have been non-Jewish (I am not sure).

Her father, Louis BARNETT was born on the 28 September 1886 in the East End
of London to Baron and Agnes BARNETT (nee Nunes-Martines). Louis had the
following brothers and sisters:
Rosetta (Rose); Joshua; Aaron (Harry); Nancy, Kate and Miriam.

I would love to get in touch with her and hope someone can suggest a
suitable newspaper I could write to.

Re : Family of Henry (Harry) GOLDSTON
Henry (Harry) GOLDSTON was the son of Rev. Abraham & Amelia GOLDSTON. He was
born on 15 February 1877 at 1 Sandys Row, Bishopsgate, London, E. He had

London Synagogue/teacher at Westminster JFS; Rev. Isaac GOLDSTON of New West
End Synagogue; Joseph GOLDSTON; Simeon GOLDSTON (Canada), Frances GOLDSTON;

According to an obituary in the Jewish Chronicle of his father, dated 5
January 1906 it mentions the he was living in Idaho, USA. However, in the 8
September 1916 edition of the Jewish Chronicle he was then living in
Hoquiam, Wash.

I would love to contact his children or grandchildren.

Any suggestions on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated.

Surname "movement" from BAKSTANSKY to BAKSHT? #general

Ernest Fine <efine@...>

I'm curious as to whether there would be a reason for a man to change his
surname >from BAKSTANSKY to BAKSHT, possibly upon remarriage after his spouse
died?

I know that we have many variants of BAKSTANSKY, and I've seen name changes
upon immigration, or for name simplification, or to be more "Americanized,"
or to return to family roots. This particular change, if it occurred, would
have been around 1865 in Belarus, for an approximately 25-40 year old male.
The significant event would have been the death of a spouse, and a marriage
to a new spouse.

Likely event? Unlikely event? Impossible event? Ideas appreciated....

Wloclawek, Alexandrow and Ciechocinek #general

George Fogelson <fogelson@...>

My grandfather was in WWI and I have recently discovered postcards he
collected of the towns mentioned above dated 1918. They are specifically
of:

Alekandrow: ul. Dluga (2 street scenes) and train station

Wloclawek view of town center and market, the river and vista of city in
background, and the Bishops Palace. (Palac Biskupa)

Ciechocinek: the three postcards are of large villas: Willa Felicjanka,
Villa Janina and Pensjonat Zachela

If anyone wants xerox copies of these postcards I would be happy to do so -
I would request that you mail me a self stamped addressed envelope and I
will sned them on. As I live in the US, the postage would have to be in US
denominations. I think the postcards are historically significant to those
who may be researching these towns and I wthought it would be nice to share
them if anyone is interested.
Please respond privately and I will send you my home address.

Auschwitz survivors in Munich #general

From: Lancy <lspalter@netvision.net.il>

Dear fellow genners,

I have found photographs of several relatives who survived
Auschwitz and were living in Munich since the end of WWII and up
to 1948, waiting to emigrate to the U.S.

Does anybody know if Auschwitz survivors were living in Munich in
an organized community or in a transitory camp? If so, would
there be records anywhere of such a community, its members and
when and how they dispersed?

Any ideas will be welcome.

Lancy,
Most of the holocaust survivors in Gemany and Austria after WWII lived in DP
(Displaced Persons) camps. The camps were supervised by UNRRA and were run
internally by the survivors. Some lived as individuals, but the majority
lived in groups according to their political affiliation with the respective
Zionist organizations and parties.
It seems unlikely that a group of Auschwitz survivors lived together as a
group on their way to the US.

Helen/Elke #belarus

Avrohom Krauss <avkrauss@...>

The name "Helen" is a good choice for "Elke", especially if your family
comes >from a vicinity (Eg. parts of Russian Poland) where the "H" sound
is dropped (like the Cockneys of England). Then, "Helen" is said like
"Ellen", which is similar enough to be used for "Elke".

BTW, much to my dismay, this accent transfered over to Israel, where
words with the letter "Heh" sound like written with an "Aleph". I find
myself engaged in a seemingly loosing battle correcting my kids about
this!

Cuba--Cemetery (Havana/Guanabacoa) #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

In my effort to learn about my ALHADEF family in Cuba, I would like to
know what is printed on four tombstones for people whom I believe are
family members. I have found someone in Cuba who is willing to visit
the cemetery. I know that the cemetery is called "Cementerio Sefardi"
and that it is in a place near Havana called Guanabacoa. But now I
need to tell this person exactly where the cemetery is located!

Can anyone describe the location of the Cementerio Sefardi in
Havana/Guanabacoa?? Perhaps it is on or near some well-known street
or landmark?

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@mail.wittenberg.edu>

P.S. The tombstones I am looking for there are:

Ventura Alhadef Arrobas, 10 agosto 1952
Jacobo Altalef, 4 abril 1948, B-25-15
Rafael Alhadef Arrobas, 21 abril 1966, B-38-2
Fany Alhadef Avanda, 3 agosto 1983

Re: Poor Jews'Temporary Shelter -England #general

Colin Plen

In England there was an establishment of Jews who had been there for many
years. As they saw what the Germans called the Ostjuden, the poor Jews from
the East, coming into the country they decided that numbers of this class
of Jew coming into England would lower them in the eyes of the English
gentiles. So they set up the refuge in order to care for the poor Jews and
get them out of the country as soon as possible. They were sent on to
America, South Africa, Australia, so as not to embarass themselves.
The Shelter was indeed a shelter and a tzedakah was performed but it was
done to hurry the embarassments out of the country.

Greetings,
I was able to get information >from the site of the Poor Jews' Temporary
Shelter Database however there was no explanation what the Shelter did.
I'm interested in what kind of help the Shelter offered.
Thank you,
