I am looking for a person in the Grodno area who might assist me in
securing the surname of my Great Grandfather. He was born there in 1836,
moved to England in 1856.

Please e-mail me at Grandad10@Juno.com. Thank you very much.

Re: Blocking Genners Responses #general

Dear Genners,

I agree with Peter Zavon's analysis:

"Some people get more spam than others, or are more bothered by it.
These are systems designed to ensure that a live person is sending an
individual message. Don't take it personally, because it's not just to
annoy you..... "

I had used a moderate setting until two weeks ago, when I received a call
from a fellow genner saying that he was unable to send some important
information to me because my box was full. When I checked, I was chagrinned
to find that during a several day absence, spam had filled my inbox. As an
experiment, I have had the spam setting on high for the past two weeks. As a
result, no spam has entered my inbox. I have plenty of memory for important
communications. During that period, >1100 spam messages went directly into a
spam folder. I received a number of messages which my ISP refers to as suspect,
of which most were spam. I read the few that were legitimate and promptly
responded, placing these correspondents in my address book.

Please take a few seconds to complete the form when you first contact a
Genner. As members of Jewish Gen, we are conveying keen interest in hearing
from each other. Having a spam blocker is not offensive if we are understanding
of each other. We don't need to be dissuaded >from helping each other by a tech
inconvenience.

Thanks for considering this point of view.

Best Regards,
Susan Goldsmith

Not being a Windows user, IE, with its vulnerabilities, is unavailable to

identically on any and all browsers. For what it's worth, I use Firefox.

That it doesn't work with Thunderbird is not a surprise: Thunderbird is a
mail and news client, not a browser at all.
Ooops! I meant Firefox of course. IME Hebrew sites don't seem to work
as well with Firefox as with IE and oft times not at all.

Request for tombstone translation (ViewMate VM6190) #austria-czech

Michael Gordy

Now on Viewmate as file VM6190 is the tombstone of Georg REISS
of Straznice (near Hodonin). Can someone perhaps translate for
me? In particular:
(1) How would Georg's Hebrew name be written/pronounced in
English?
(2) Would his father most likely have been Simon or Samuel in
German?
(3) Any indication of cause of death? Georg and two of his
brothers all died young within a couple of months in 1899.

Re: Were they from Poland or Russia? #general

Yisrael Asper

When borders changed sometimes ethnicities changed with them. For instance
I was told that Rav Meir Arak and so naturally my mother's mother's sister
Hinda (Renke) Arak were Eastern Galitzianers (Ukrainian Galitzianers)
I amusingly can claim myself then in a larger sense as partially Romanian
since I learned that it is true but only because borders switched and in
this case so did ethnic identities but in some instances like in the
Lublin area peoples ethnic identities stuck with Polish. People move and
ethnic identities don't always switch.
