MEISELS #rabbinic

Jan Meisels Allen <janmallen@...>

Dear Rav-SIG Readers:

I am writing to you but I am not certain that I am related to the famous
Rabbi and statesman Dov Ber MEISELS of Krakow and Warsaw fame, although
family lore - which predates me-says that we are.

My paternal great grandfather was Meier MEISELS who was born in 1848, his
father's name off the metzvah is: Yehuda Levish MEISELS. Yehuda was married
to Leah SEGAL/SIEGEL. Meier immigrated in 1890 >from Brody, then-Galicia,
now Ukraine- I don't know if he was born in Brody. Meier was married to
Adelia LIEERMAN and they had 7 children, all born before immigration to the
US. My grandfather, Alexander SISIKIND, was the eldest of their children,
born in 1872. Meier's death certificate >from NYC in 1925 says place of
birth Austria-Hungary. My father and his brothers told their children that
we were related to Rabbi Dov Ber, but never said how, and now its too late
to inquire. I know nothing about any siblings of Yehuda or Meier.

If Dov Ber, was born in 1798-1800 then the possibilities are that Yehuda
could have been a nephew or son- although I have looked at Dov Ber's
genealogy listed in "The Unbroken Chain" and I didn't see anything that
looked possible. Apologies to Neil Rosenstein, if I missed something.

If any one knows of anything that would connect my "MEISELS" to that of Dov
Ber's I would appreciate hearing >from you.

Many thanks to all those who responded to my posting on 8 June
requesting an English transliteration of the male name
Yud-Chet-Yud-Gimmel-Lamud (in poor writing).

The consensus of the responses was that the fourth letter was
probably an Aleph (not a Gimmel) which would make the name
"Yechiel".

Such a quick response >from such a wonderful group.

Russian names #general

Rosa3035@...

The original manifest of the ship that my paternal uncle and his family
arrived in USA was in a very clear and beautifully hand written script.
With all the flourishes and curlicues in use at that time.

The ship "Petersburg" was owned and operated by "Russian Volunteer Fleet"
and operated out of the Russian port of Libau.

The purser or clerk that wrote up this manifest had to have magnificent
knowledge of English and ability to write such script.

My uncertainty concerns the English spelling of a Russian name spoken in a
Russian-Jewish dialect.

The name as written is "BATSCHKURINSKY"

I know that "T" in Russian is pronounced "S".
That there is no "CH" sound in Russian.

Would any member of this marvelous group care to give their impression of
how to spell this name.

piled high in a jar of honey. It was terribly sweet and sticky and I could
never taste more than one or 2 at a tasting.

Thank you for any insight you can give me.

Russian names #ukraine

Rosa3035@...

The original manifest of the ship that my paternal uncle and his family
arrived in USA was in a very clear and beautifully hand written script. With
all the flourishes and curlicues in use at that time.

The ship "Petersburg" was owned and operated by "Russian Volunteer Fleet" and
operated out of the Russian port of Libau.

Would any member of this marvelous group care to give their impression of how
to spell this name.
