Public Library of Des Moines Obits #general

delete_this_to_reply_stacy_harris@...

The Public Library of Des Moines does genealogical research for what
I feel is an excessive fee for out-of-state inquiries, however it sends
gratis copies via interlibrary loan of obits gleaned >from its obit index.

All you do is type in the name of the deceased and you'll receive
the name of the Des Moines newspaper, section, page and column # on
which the obit appears. Give this complete information to the
interlibrary loan department of your local library and you can receive an
unlimited number of obits free of charge.

While requests are filled five entries at a time, if your experience
is like mine you'll receive your photocopies in about a week!

Warning: The index does not appear to be complete, as I had several
relatives who died in Des Moines whom I couldn't find. I fond my ggf but
not my ggm who died the following year...

How's this for a success story-without even trying! #general

Sid Greenberg <sid.greenberg@...>

I haven't had any luck finding out if my paternal gf. had any brothers
or sisters. My brother and I, and our wives, were at at a wedding
reception for a cousin on my mother's side. The bride's gm. brought a lady
over to meet us who said she was our cousin- on my paternal gf.'s side.
Her gm. was my gf's. sister. and there was one other sister and a
brother. I was taking down family info. >from her just before we left, and
we have been in touch with her a few times since, finding out who was who.
The funny thing is, she lives in Toronto near us, and we didn't know
about her till now. When I got home that night, there was a call >from a
cousin on my father's side, saying that she had been contacted by a
distant cousin in D.C. She asked if she could give him my name, and she
would have him contact me. Before that happened, he replied to my posting
at Ancestry. com, and we have been catching up ever since.
It gets curioser and curioser, and ain't it grand!

I don't recall hearing of this before as a Jewish name. "Asman" is the
name of a Persian sky-god, and in Sanskrit is "heaven" or "stone". But
a Google search turns up several Jewish references, including
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/ushachi/ushatz.html
and
http://www.jcpa.org/jl/jl451.htm
So it could be Jewish. But there's also
www.colgate.edu/scene/mar1998/alumni/news45.html
which refers to a person of Armenian descent.
