Re: litvaksig digest: August 06, 2001: Cohen names in Lithuania #lithuania

Responding to the query of Andi Ziegelman, my Kohanim family members were
surnamed RUTSTEIN (variant spelling). A tombstone in the Jewish cemetery
in Vilkaviskis for a RUTSTEIN has carved into it the hands in the
priestly blessing configuration.

Ron Kathren

MODERATOR'S NOTE: The initial question dealt with variants in Lithuania for the COHEN surname.

Krupyan Castel #lithuania

Gilbert Herbert <herbert@...>

I am repeating part of a message I posted the other day, which
apparently for many of the recipients appeared as a blank.

In an announcement of marriage in London (in the Jewish Chronicle) in
1880, the bridegroom, Meyer H[aim] Herbert, is referred to as the son
of the late Hon. Reuven Douve [Dov] Sterren Herbert, of Krupyan Castel,
Lithuania.

I cannot trace this town in any reference or map. In Stetlfinders there
is a town once called Kroupyani, today known as Belaliai, near to
Ukmerge, which might be the place I am looking for. Does anyone have any
information on this town, especially whether there is a castle in the
vicinity, which might explain the name Krupyan Castel

Can anyone out there throw light on the subject.

Shabbat Shalom,

Gilbert Herbert, Haifa

Just because it is in print, doesn't make it complete or accurate. I think
I'd rather hear more about what people have successfully done, than
reiteration of what ancestry.com wrote. I have had a subscription with them
for years now, as well, and I have read there material on my own.

Re: Overseas Payment #ukraine

I must concur that this has been my experience in the recent year. Plain
old money orders >from drug stores, for $1, don't even know whose they are.
No refusals or returns except the one unsigend one.

I would love to hear >from everyone that has written emails outlining the
other options, how many times they have used them, and what the results
were.

Regards,
Leslie Gyi

About eight years ago, I ordered metrical information from
the Polish State Archives on a number of occasions. At that
time, it was requested that I make the remuneration payable
to the Polish State Archives bank account and to send the
payment to that bank.

I paid for these services with a plain postal money order, which
cost 85c at the time, not an international postal money order,
which then cost about $8.50. This method of payment worked
on four different occasions.

Things may have changed since then, but it may be worth a try
to make payment by the aforementioned method.

Orlando Florida Meeting Notice #general

The next meeting of the JGSGO is next Tuesday, August 14, in the Senior
Lounge of the JCC. It is our last summer meeting this year and will be
another general discussion of genealogy. An interesting item to
contemplate on is if you and your great grandparents were the same age
and not related would you be friends? Also if any of the persons attending
were at the London Conferance we would like for them to give a report.

I hope to see each of you there.
