Following the theme of SA Jewish Newspapers I have looked at an article by
J. Judelowitz and another one by Prof S. Rappaport on the subject. I have
extracted the following titles dating >from around 1890. I do not have
access to JA Poliva's 'A short history of the Jewish Press and
literature in South Africa >from the earliest days to the present time'.
Vereeniging, 1961, JHB : Prompt Printing.
Many of these papers and periodicals lasted only a short period of time. I
believe the most complete collection of SA Yiddish newspapers is now in the
University of Texas, Austin.
I will be putting the full table and dates onto the SA website.

Re: Rabbi David BORNSTEIN of Lodz #rabbinic

Dear Abe,

Per information linked to the Lodz ShtetLinks site, Rabbi David
BORNSTEIN (1876-1943) was the third rebbe in the Sochatshov
(Sochaczew) dynasty. He was the grandson of Rabbi Abraham, author of
"Avne Nezer" and was born in Nasielsk, near Sochaczew, and died in
Warsaw ghetto. He was the son of Rabbi Shmuel, rebbe of Sochatshov
Hassidim. Rabbi BORNSTEIN was elected a member of the Council of
Sages of the Agudat Yisroel Organization and established a yeshiva in
Pabianice, near Lodz.

In the ghetto field of the Lodz cemetery, there is still in existence
an ohel covering the final resting place of Hassidic dynasties from
Pabianice and Sochaczew. The cemetery records may yield further
information about the BORNSTEIN family.

For more information, see Lodz ShtetLinks.

Hi all,

Does anyone have any genealogical information about Rabbi David
BORNSTEIN of Lodz? My BORNSTEIN relatives are said to have had many
rabbis and schochtim in the family, and I recently learned that this
man may have been an uncle of one of my unconfirmed cousins (same
surname and shtetl, which was Zelechow).

Additionally, the family was said to have been related to another
famous rabbi, who is named in my great-grandfather's memoirs. As
they are written in Yiddish, I'm thinking of posting that section to
View-Mate, but if anyone on this list volunteers to translate it,
I'll be happy to email it to you myself. For this, please respond
privately, but please post any response to the genealogy question to
the list.

Thanks,

NARA #belarus

SUSAN POPIOL <BornFreeAgain@...>

I have received several emails sent directly to my personal email
address rather than through the Belarus group email address. I am
replying to the group because I think this information would benefit
many others.

The emails all involved queries about what NARA stood for. These were
initials I used in a previous email. These initials stand for the
NATIONAL ARCHIVES which is located in Washington DC. There are also
various regional offices open to the public. They do have a website
that provides extensive information on what kinds of data they have
available. They also list all regional offices. The website address
is: www.nara.gov

For anyone researching relatives >from New York State there are other
archives to consider. This is something I just found out about today.

There is the MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES which contains data >from New York City
and the five boroughs. They are open to the public. This includes City
Census data and much much more. The website address is:
www.ci.nyc.ny.us

There is the NEW YORK STATE ARCHIVES (also known as SARA) which is
located in Albany, NY. I don't have the exact website address at the
moment. If you type in the name in a search it should come up.

I found just browsing through all of these websites very informative and
educational. It gave me ideas for avenues of research I would never
have considered.

person in Brazil.

On her behalf, as well as mine, I am very touched and grateful for all
of you who reached out to help!

One doesn't have to be a non-Jew or a socio-path or even a reform Jew to be
the black sheep in the family. A few years ago my wife and I went to the
Brit Milah of a the grandson relative of my wife, a scion of a Galitzianner
family in Jerusalem. Of course Jewish Genealogy came up and the grandmother
of the baby whispered in my wife's ear about a cousin who went off and
married a "Litvak." OH the Shame!!!
David Gurtler

I can certainly relate to this thread. I recently heard >from a
cousin, who found me through the JGFF. I was thrilled, as was she.
I was ready to write up a success story! But I told her I wasn't
Jewish, and I have not heard a word >from her since. Needless to say,
I was hurt and disappointed.

Please keep in mind that the relatives you find may not be Jewish.

Hi Lisa:

Alot can happen in families, Jewish or not, and while
I can not speak for others, know that if you do not
try then there will be always be the thought in your
mind I should had tried. Rejection is not easy, and
in some instances a separation should be there for
othe reasons. Yet, there are many forms of being the
"Black Sheep" that the past actions of others has
caused the present situation. Realize that in its
fullest, and know at least you walk in peace.

Sincerely,
Edna McDonald
