Jewish citizenship #general

Robert Fraser <rgfraser@...>

How common (or uncommon) was it for Jews living in eastern Europe generally
(I'm thinking mainly about the Austrian empire areas) to be allowed to
becaome citizens of their country of residence? At what time did it become
common? Was it at about the same time as the adoption of surnames by Jews,
the Emancipation under Kaiser Franz Josef,,or at another time?

Based on the questions we are seeing about how to find the Enumeration
District to access the census page, you don't need it if you are using the
1910 NY state or NYcity census CD-ROM purchased in the JewishGenMall.

The Heritage Quest CD gives you the exact NARA film to look at, including
the page and part. That assumes that you are close to either NARA
in Washington D.C. or one of the Regional Archive branches, but of course
that is not always the case.<g>

Avotaynu has come to the rescue. To determine which film to order >from any
one of the thousands of Family History Centers around the world, go
to http://www.avotaynu.com/1910censusny.htm to see how to convert the NARA
REEL to the FHL film number.

For example: My own SKIDELSKY search reported reel 1039 (in the T624
series of NARA films) Part 1 Page 183 A for Morris Skidelskiy

I have my choice of going to a nearby Regional Archive here in southern
California and looking at reel #1039 and finding the correct page and part,
or ordering the film >from a local FHC.

Using the Avotaynu site noted above all I do is look up reel #1039 and find
that I need to order film # 1375052

Hope this helps everybody make effective use of the CD.

P.S. the page #s are **stamped** on the heading of the census page....not
handwritten in the upper right hand corner, those are NOT page numbers no
matter what the volunteer at the regional archives tried to tell me <grin>
