Harris and Barnett #general

Harold Pollins <snillop@...>

It is interesting to observe that of thirty soldiers with the forename
Harris who died in the British Army in World War I only twelve were
Jews and 18 were non-Jews.
Clearly Harris was not a uniquely Jewish forename.

I want to thank Jaqueline Waldstein Schwab for sharing that great URL.
I put in 1946 and immediately found the list of the victims of the King
David bombing, including my cousin, who was mentioned as Mr. Yanowsky.
I'm busy putting my names into the search field!

Thank you to the twenty-two people who took the time & trouble to
respond to my posting.
I am pleased that everyone agreed with my sentiments, but at the end
of the day I still don't have the information!
The general consesus >from all the emails was for me to ignore her,
move on and contact other family members in the hope they will help
me instead - and this I shall do!

Lost Branch: KOSVINER (Cont.) #general

Hershkovitz Arnon <arnonh@...>

Hello!

I began looking for KOSVINERs just a few days ago, yet the responses
I've got and the phone talkes I did, gave me some useful information
of what I'm looking for.

Reuven KOSVINER (son of Akiva)
immigrated >from Romania to Rosh Pina, Israel in 1882, and then to
South Africa in the 1900s. (It's possible that he went back to Israel
in the 1920s and then again to SA)

He had 3 children, all went back to SA/Australia.
I'm looking for their descendants (or anyone of them who's still alive):

* Akiva - Had two children:
1. Barbara (married ABRAMS)
Lived in Sandton, Northern Johannesburg suburbs.
I'm looking for her (if she's alive) and her descendants.
2. Raymond (married Arlene), lived in SA.
* Morris;
* Naomi - married Yaacov FRIEDMAN; Have descendants in Israel (?).

Reuven's brothers, David and Mendl, went also to SA at around the same
time (1900s) and have descendants in SA and Israel.

I'm looking for information about the mentioned Reuven and his descendants.
If any of this sounds familiar - plz let me know.

Yours Sincerely,
Arnon Hershkovitz

A special thank you to those who took the time to find listings of
possible Basist family relatives in Australia after my March 15 posting.
I've gotten three possible leads, one of whom sent me an e-mail. Will be
getting in touch with said gentlemen to see if we are related. Thanks
ever so much.

Varda, it is probably because they only saw the w-f issue and didn't
notice the extra "k" or didn't understand its significance.

Israel Pickholtz

Even if their town was close, knowing as I do that my family
was never Jankowsky, I can't figure out why everyone seems to think I
should still contact Jan Murray.

Re: Meaning of Polish word fego #general

In trying to read Polish vital records, I sometimes encounter the word
"nego." One e.g. (in a birth record) is as follows: w obecnos'ci
s'wiadko'w starozakon nego Israela Segal, handlarza zboz.[symbol over
the z]a, which I gather translates as "in the presence of witnesses"
(followed by information about each witness). Could "nego" be the
witness's occupation or trade?

I've also seen a word that looks like "fego," on a birth or marriage
cert., immediately preceding a woman's name. (Might be "fegi"; hard to
tell.)
Nadia ,

This is actually a one word and it should read: "starozakonnego" which
is an adjective form of the word "starozakonny".
Starozakonny on the other hand, is an archaic word for the "Jew" and it
literally means: "the follower of the Old Testament".
Starozakonny = Stary (old) + Zakon (Testament).

And all sentence should be translated as ":....in the presence of the
witnesses, Jew Israel Segal, the grain merchant....."

Hope this help

Brion Bott <brion@...>

My grandfather was Harris. His Jewish name was Mordka Zvi.
Brion Bott

My grandfather's name was Harris taken >from Hirsch or Zvi meaning
'deer'. When looking for his naturalization I found two other
Harris Silversteins neither of whom was him.
Paul Silverstone
New York

Harris is certainly a common Jewish surname (e.g. Rolf
of that ilk), but haven't come across it as a given name
